Any chance we have 11k there for the Samford game/Sr Day to overtake Mercer for 2nd place? Or are we going to cut it close with ETSU to hold onto 3rd place?

Any chance we have 11k there for the Samford game/Sr Day to overtake Mercer for 2nd place? Or are we going to cut it close with ETSU to hold onto 3rd place? The Citadel still has one home game, on Nov 23 vs. Wofford. I'm sure they will have a 10k plus crowd. I think that is a done deal for 1st place, the 7k in attendance last weekend and the 8k vs Furman (rain) did us in for this season's top attendance numbers. I think we may have a shot at 2d with a good crowd for the Samford game.

I agree - Citadel pretty much wraps the “title” up. But it looks like we need 11k to best Mercer for 2nd place and have to be within 1000 of ETSU’s attendance to stay in 3rd place. I am betting we stay in 3rd, and have a crowd similar to maybe slightly better than the last couple of games (around our average of 9k).

Week #12 (Nov. 16, 2019)
home attendance this week........
7,363 - Chattanooga (Citadel) 7,336 - WCU (Samford) 7,121 - ETSU (Mercer) 6,457 - Wofford (Furman)
How can the game that is basically for the SoCon football championship, only have 6,457 in attendance. I'd have thought that Furman would bring at least that many to the game. The two schools are only 38 miles apart......... of course when you realize that Wofford is only averaging 4,775 per game, it clears up the picture. Two good teams, no fans to support them.

Like I have always said, you are not going to improve your gate receipts by staying in the SoCon. Too many small Private Universities in the Conference that do not travel well. They have private individuals that pay big bucks to make them highly competitive in the FCS like Jerry Richardson at Wofford.

even if we wanted to leave the socon we can't considering we can't even beat the small private schools much less the large public schools

I don’t understand this notion about how the size of the student population should matter like it would at the high school level. Many of those “small private schools” beat a whole lot of teams year-in and year-out. They have large endowments, better facilities, bigger budgets, etc. So why is there an expectation that because we have a bigger student population we should be better? We all have the same number of scholarships.
Schools like Wofford and Furman are winning because they have leadership who care about football and deep pocket donors/endowments. It has nothing to do with the size of the student body.

We all know that rich alumni with deep pockets can make ANY school competitive, small or large.

Sorry Jerry - my post was in response to the post right above mine talking about WCU not being able to beat the “small” schools. I have seen similar posts in the past, and was just pointing out the size of the student body doesn’t really have much impact on how good a football program is. Having a medical school and/or a law school would be more relevant because of the donors those would produce.
As for the putrid crowds at many of the SoCon games - including the de facto championship in Spartanburg this past weekend - that seems par for the course. I have commented several times about the crowds for the teams at the top are terrible. Could you imagine the crowd in Cullowhee if we were playing for the league title in our last home game of a season?!?!?!
