With the dismal shape of our football program there is a lot of truth to that statement.

“The (first) two games, there was really no competition,” N.C. State senior safety Jarius Morehead told the media after the game. “This was a real game.” What did you expect? NC State has an athletic budget of $87,976,532.00 Their coaching/staff budget alone is $35 million, their scholarship budget is $13 million, they have 85 fully funded, scholarships for football. Somebody should be fired if we were real competition for them.

The road to respectability was never going to be paved with lollipops and Catamounts. No argument here, no mater what the reason.

The road to respectability was never going to be paved with lollipops and Catamounts. No argument here, no mater what the reason. The road to respectability requires a Board of Trustees and a Chancellor that gives a crap about athletics, and are willing to spend money on facilities, better pay for staff/coaches, and increased athletic budgets for all sports. Without all this, everything coming out of the admin, the board, the coaches or anyone else, even those on this board is all sugar-coating, and more lipstick on the pig that is athletics at WCU. We are the laughing stock of the conference in overall athletics, and as the years roll on, it just gets worse and will continue in that direction. The answer is dollars into the budget, unfortunately, things have been ignored and neglected for so long, that the dollar figure to fix things is now high.

As an example only, since the NC State budget was brought up above, their current budget (2018) was $87,976,532.00
In 2005, NC State's budget was $35,793,670.00 - that is an increase of over $50 million in 13 years.
This is an example of the type growth WCU needs to get out of cellar of the SoCon, I don't mean $50 million for WCU in growth, but WCU's budget grew only 8 million in that time. Not enough to fund scholarships to the NCAA allowable in all sports we field, and we field only 16 sports, the minimum to remain at Division I.
Where are the sports we used to have? men's soccer, gymnastics, wrestling - we can't afford to have them.
SoCon Budget growth - 2005 to 2018 for public schools:
ETSU 2005 - $7,178,645 2018- $24,780,474
UNCG 2005 - $7,951,158 2018 - $17,115,914
Citadel 2005 - $8,323,577 2018 - $18,401,833
Chattanooga 2005 - $10,070,959 2018 - $18,819,569
WCU 2005 - $6,782,432 2018 - $14,720,226
VMI 2005 - $7,490,795 2018 - $14,356,990
Notice the bottom two schools, yeah, the ones that usually end up in the cellar of the SoCon most seasons.

Wow.... lots of connected dots here.... this needs to get competitive and grow fast! Besides Track there’s not a single team that is consistently winning the SoCon here at western... that’s sad!

I made another quote within the last couple of years about ETSU. I stated they would move to BCS Status in the near future. They got counseling from UNCC & Old Dominion in starting up their Football Program. Guess what, UNCC was a start up program & OD had only been playing football for 3 or 4 years prior to moving to BCS Status. Right now ETSU has the most financial support of any State Supported School in the SoCon. They realize that they can not increase Game Attendance by playing SoCon Schools. A school to keep an on for the next few years. They did not hire Randy Sanders without having to make some big time commitments to him.
