As shady as it sounds, I would not be surprised if bids also helped bubble teams get included in the field. I mean if you are talking about 4 or 5 teams that are all 7-4 with very similar resumes, why not take the team who offered the NCAA the most guaranteed money? Shouldn't be that way, but explains some of the decisions over the years and certainly explains why some teams host games over teams who are more worthy/better.

If we get into the playoffs, WCU WILL submit a bid to host a first round game Thanksgiving weekend (could be a Friday night game, Saturday midday, Saturday late afternoon or Saturday night game). In many cases, it depends on who you are paired with. In 1983, Colgate came here ....even though they were higher seeded...because of our regular season attendance, questionable weather in upper New York State and the amount we guaranteed. Now, let's talk hypothetical situations...If we are paired with Davidson, we would probably host. With NC Central, I'm not sure. With Mercer or Richmond, probably not. The NCAA likes to regionalize their first round game to save money. If they run out of logical regional situations, we could end up in the Dakotas or Delaware. Just some thoughts to chew on.

Would they pair us with someone from our own conference?

They try their best not to have conference teams play in the first round. But to save money after that, theyâll line 2nd round games up wherever possible to cut down on travel. So expect a Southern team (be it us, Mercer, Gardner-Webb, NCCU, etc.) to be in games that can line up to play Furman in the 2nd game.

A second round game against Furman with a healthy offensive line and a healthy Reid at tailback. I would welcome that rematch. Reminiscent of the semi-final rematch against Furman in the Semi-finals in 1983. We tied in Cullowhee in the regular season and beat them at Furman in Travelers Rest. I was there when we tore down their goalpost. I know that Clay Hendrix remembers that game. They might beat us, but I welcome the rematch. Playing Davidson in the first round would be a mauling by Western. We could hang 70 on them and they might not score. First, we have to take care of VMI though and actually get a bid to the playoffs.

I like us at 12 and 4 ranked SOCON teams, but like them or not Furman deserves to be #2 or no worse than #3. If the bias continues weâll be relegated to getting 2 or at best 3 teams in and canceling each other out. Personally I hope FU is the 2 seed and either us or Mercer get to go beat the snot out of a MVFC or Big Sky team in the 2nd round and quarters.
The SOCON needs to have 2 teams make the quarters and at least 1 make the semis. In the current setup, that will mean going on the road and making some noise.
