I think with several recent "Mid-Major" teams doing well in the tournament (see FAU last year), the media wants to make sure they are recognizing who the next suprise team might be. I am hopeful it helps a team from the SOCON get a better seed, or perhaps even allows some other leagues get multiple bids rather than the normal 8+ teams getting in from the ACC, Big10, etc.

I wish, but it seems like the NCAA is bowing down to the "so called" Power conferences when they decided to mess up the NIT. I think starting next season. I mean it has always been that the SoCon Tournament champion will make the NCAA but at least the NIT guaranteed a spot for the Regular season regular championship which made it OK as it was a respectable and fun tournament. But now they are guaranteeing a minimum of 2 teams from each of the Power conferences that do not make the NCAA to be guaranteed a spot in the NIT and guaranteed to host. If WCU were to say win the Regular season with only 2 losses but lose in the SoCon championship, there is no guarantee that we would even get an NIT invite starting next year and if we did we probably have to go on the road to a 13-17 (as an example) mediocre to bad Cartel school. Now, those Cartel schools do not even have to be .500 or better anymore.
So I think the recent success of many "Mid-Major" teams is causing the Cartels to put pressure on the NCAA to limit the Mid-Majors as much as possible.
I like the fact that the CBI is still around and there needs to be another more affordable tournament like what the CIT was at one time until the NCAA at least does the right thing (and I am not holding my breath) and that is expand the NCAA Tournament enough to guarantee that all Tournament Champions and Regular season champions of every conference regardless of this perceived Power vs Mid Major Bull Malarky is invited to the Big Dance. Of course in those conferences where the Regular Season and Tournament champion is the same, it will likely give more at-large spots to the Cartel schools but it is the only way I think would add some parity and somewhat fairness to all conferences and reward those teams who endured the marathon of the season vs the sprint of a conference tournament and in that case, we would no longer need the CBI or those 3rd party invitational tournaments.
