In other news, Tyzhaun Claude plays 11 minutes, scores 5, and is a non-factor in an ugly loss to Georgia. Just throwing that out there for your consumption…….

Well that was brutal, at least the social before the game was enjoyable.

He started earlier in the year, but his role has decreased. In other, other news Xavier Cork is also riding the pine at TCU I expected that they both would ride the pine. GT and TCU get a lot of 4 and 5 star recruits and there is a reason they are 4 and 5 star recruits. Western gets from no star to 2 star recruits and an occasional 3 star recruit. We have had some players that have developed into players that can compete at that level but they have been few and far between. Obviously Claude and Cork are not ones that have developed into players that can compete to be starters at that level or they would be starting.

As I stated in an earlier post, I was worried that our lack of post players...which is now a void...inconsistent shooting and overall defense was going to expose us against the better SoCon teams. We have been exposed by a couple mediocre Big South teams and now will play a top Big South team. I know that when Tre, Russell and others shot 40% to 50% from the arc, we can play with a lot of people, but that has been rare lately. Without a SoCon level post player, we are going to have to hit 15 or more 3s ... and ... plaay much better defense to be competitive.

We definitely have some team speed, so I wonder why we don’t stretch the floor a little more on defense. Also, Vonterius has stopped passing the ball. Obviously, we need him to score a lot of points, but he needs to dish every so often to keep people honest. Granger can score around the block, and Vonterius didn’t pass to him on a few wide open looks

This was one of the worst offensive performances I have seen in awhile. The defensive performance wasn't any better. Watching this offense in person, made me want to pull my hair out. The amount of wide open shots we missed was astonishing. I'm honestly surprised we shot 42% from the field. The 3 ball was not falling all night and that was the issue. 25 of our 61 shots came from behind the arc. The defense was just as rough. They got into the paint way to easily just off simple ball screens from the big guys. We had no answer for them defensively. Woolbright had absolutely no help from anyone last night. Tre Jackson started to get going but by that time it was to late. Someone else has to emerge as a capable scorer on nightly basis.
Our guards are so undersized and that was exposed again last night. Opposing guards have been able to back down our guards and get into the paint with ease. With this team also having no interior scoring presence, its putting more pressure on our undersized guards to score and rebound. Woolbright has been the lone player to really be able to score in the paint consistently. A good majority of our shots are being created off the bounce. Id love to see more drive and kick opportunities because that puts more pressure on the defense and creates open looks. This is also where not having a true big comes in. Opponents know our bigs post no threat to score and that's why you see no doubles come when they have the ball. If Claude had stayed, he would attract more help from the defense which would would create more open looks from the perimeter. Something has to be done soon because the top tier teams in the SOCON will pick us a part.
