Yall are acting like you don’t remember the special teams debacle of the Mercer game. Maybe by committee will work better not one person in charge of every aspect of special teams.

I vaguely remember there were fumbles on kickoffs and stuff but that was one game. Did he get fired because of that one game?

The Mercer game was just one of those were stuff started rolling down hill. The first KO fumble was by Cal Jones who is a very solid and dependable return guy. The second was by a FR. Not saying those weren't really bad - and that they didn't lead directly to us getting behind so far that we didn't have a chance to win. But those 2 fumbles were just ugly plays on an ugly day.
I can remember the days under Speir where we didn't have a dedicated special teams coach, and we had multiple ugly special teams days. That being said, I would say Kerwin Bell fully realizes we have to be tougher and better on defense. He went and got what appears to be a very good DC, and based on all the recruiting threads he is using lots of offers on that side of the ball. We'll see how it works, but at the FCS level there are only so many $$$$s to go around and he has to maximize what he can on the coaching staff.

I remember lots of turnovers as well. I think I lost count of all the fumbles and I do remember a interception close to our own goal line that was reuturned for a TD when Cole threw right into the arms of a rusher. It was just an all around terrible game by everybody and I don't think it can be laid at the feet of just special teams. Now, I am happy that coach has recognized the need for a much better defensive unit so will just have to wait and see how this decision works out. Hopefully it will be fine.

Kirwin and Jerry evidently work well together as they won a National championship in 2018 at Valdosta State University. I think with the extra defensive coach, they can work together go share working with the special teams players, and hopefully we want suffer with poor special teams this fall. My prediction is 5 wins at home and 3 to 4 wins on the road, which adds up to a 9 or 8 win season. Kirwin is the man and Jerry Odom is a GREAT asset to our coaching staff. GO CATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bob, keep in mind that WCU will have a terrible SoCon schedule next fall. However, I hope you are right.
