Do keep in mind that WCU has not maintained a winning culture in any major sport for decades. There is no sports culture at WCU. The fact that we get the turnout that we do get is actually impressive in my opinion giving the typically poor performance of the programs. Tonight’s Sanford game showed what is missing — something to be excited for. Sadly the team couldn’t get it done in front of the best crowd I’ve ever seen for a WCU bball game.

Third best crowd in school history, second best crowd in 3 1/2 decades. Old timers on this board, including myself, will tell you that Western maintained a winning culture in the 70s and in the 80s, when Cullowhee was a lot more remote than it is now. But in the late 80s, when it was time for the school to buckle down and make a commitment to further that winning culture, they didn’t do it. One mountain school did and one mountain school didn’t. All these decades later, we’re starting to make a few strides.

I agree Speedwell. If we finally make a commitment now, the crowds will come. I do not believe the students are apathetic at Western. I just think they want a winner to support. If we win consistently, the RAC will fill up. I don’t want to get my hopes up but I think this administration gets it. Coulter did not do anything for athletics and it set us back decades. Chancellor Brown is a true leader who gets it and is working with Alex to put winners on the courts and fields of play. It will happen but we have some catching up to do.
GO CATS!!!
