I am no stranger to the fact that Western has had one of, if not the worst D1 programs in the nation for a few years. I am also aware that the team was very young this year and actually played some close games, including the one that I went to against The Citadel for the home opener last season. I was actually extremely impressed with the atmosphere for the game considering how poor the team had been in the past, and can only imagine how much bigger that atmosphere could get if the Cats were to start winning games. My question is whether or not this young talent and current coaching staff appear to be forming a competitive team. I am going to be in the marching band and I have never seen such a fantastic atmosphere for the band kids, and I really want to team that up with a successful football team and have some awesome experiences.
I'm hoping for the best, Go Cats!

I feel better days are ahead. WCU's best years were the 1970s and early 80s, with a little run in the early-mid 90s almost making the playoffs, but other than that it hasn't been that great. But the run from 2006 until now has been absolutely porous and I feel that every CAT supporter has even been a bit bewildered and we certainly all have our opinions as the root cause of this good run of bad luck.
For one thing, the schedule gets easier. I can predict 5-7 right now without blinking an eye just based on two SAC opponents, a VMI team that is notoriously bad (even when WCU has been bad they've always managed to beat VMI), a Mercer team that yes was 10-2 last year but played non-scholarship football and last, a Presbyterian team that, while they will give us a game at their place, is still a team we should beat.
5-7 in 2014 would do wonders for this program when you consider since 2006, we've went 2-9, 1-10, 3-9, 2-9, 2-9, 1-10, 1-10, 2-10. Wofford is down a bit as well. I'm not even gonna attempt to think we can hang with South Florida and especially Alabama. Furman and UTC will be tough as well. All in all, if your freshman year in Cullowhee nets a 5 win season, then start smiling because the rest of your time there should be better than that.
Welcome to the CAT family!

That 1983 season was unforgettable! I wished at that time the season would'nt end it was an exciting season. The comeback win 17-16 over East Tennessee St. in Cullowhee. The thrashing of the Citadel 44-17 in Charleston, and of course the 41-15 win over Appalachian St. in Cullowhee. It was so much fun watching the Appalachian St. fans leave that game in the last 5 minutes after we handed them a demoralizing loss! The 1990's were the Steve Hodgin era after that 3-8 finish in 1990 we had that 2-9 finish in 1991 but from there went 7-4 in 1992, 6-5 in 1993, and 6-5 again in 1994. We just kept coming close in the 90's to breaking through, but just couldn't. I think if we hadn't loss the way we did at home that year to the Citadel 36-31 and gave up a late score in Boone, NC to Appalachian St. in that heartbreaking 14-12 loss we would've gon to the playoffs in 1992 that team had some talent on there!

We are close to breaking through I believe! I think in the next 2 years we can make a run towards the playoffs, maybe even make a run in the playoffs!

I agree that Wofford will be down this year, I think we can be competitive with South Florida, of course I am saying that holding my breath lol! I don't think we will beat Furman, but we can win over the Citadel, Wofford, Mercer, Presbyterian, Catawba, Brevard, and VMI so I guess I am saying 7-5 overall this year! GO CATS!

Losses in Boone in 92 and 93 certainly were letdowns considering the teams Hodgin had, not to mention that ETSU game in 1994. But certainly losing Bill Bleil after the 2001 season sent the program into a spiral that we are still trying to get out of. But I feel we have the right administration to see it through. GO CATS!

Oops...let's try this again I did something wrong here! I agree that 1994 season was a missed opportunity we lost 2 heartbreakers at the end that cost us that season. East Tennessee St. hits like a 40 yard something field goal and wins 34-31, then we lose on a late scoring pass to Appalachian St. 12-7 that cost us that year. I thought after we hammered VMI 33-7 there we would win the last 2 games and sneak in, but we didn't!

Thanks everyone, it sounds as if the program is looking up, and that's a very good thing. I can definitely see where the schedule is easier this year, I hope that the SoCon doesn't lose too much of its prowess with all of this conference realignment. Your knowledge of WCU football history is all very impressive, I'm happy to have stumbled upon such a passionate group of fans.
