With the loss of Eddie Sullivan, junior Troy Mitchell seems to have a lock on the starting position.
So, who will be the back up? Rumor has it that senior running back/wide receiver Garrett Brown has been switched to QB for the upcoming season. True freshman Jackson Brown is also a possibility.
The big questions -
- Is Speir looking to redshirt McDonald?
- Can Brown get back up to speed as a QB in just one summer?
Brown is 6'0" 195 lbs. He played his first two seasons as a wide receiver, and started his junior season as a wide receiver before converting to running back midway through the season. But in HS, he was a QB - Named the 2010 Asheville Citizen-Times All-Western North Carolina Football Player of the Year after accounting for a WNC-record 55 touchdowns his senior year ... Set a Buncombe County record for passing yards in 2010, amassing 3,429 yards ... Selected to the NCPreps.com 3-A All-State football team as a quarterback. Brown did play in a spread offense at Erwin HS.
What's your guess?

I honestly think Garrett Brown has been not only under appreciated but under utilized at Western. Of course we don't know what happens in practices or in the locker room but he has in the past shown signs of brilliance. He is incredibly athletic and I have seen him do some pretty great things. That being said it is rumored this staff is making some major changes this year in hopes of having a good season but to position themselves for a great season next year. I think that they have a pretty good idea of what they are going to do and the plan they have for the QB position. I guess we'll see come August 1 won't we.

In my opinion, there is no doubt Brown has been underutilized. He was also not one of Speir's recruits. I hope he does well in the move back to quarterback, and gives Troy a serious run for the starting job. The team will be in a much better position with two very two good quarterbacks ready to play every game.

So Macdonald is not an option? The kid is special, hard worker. If they don't have him as the back-up I'm sure they redshirt him. I don't know enough about the options on roster.

Heck, he might be the starter unless we see major improvement elsewhere. I certainly don't think they can afford to redshirt him. We've certainly seen true freshmen QBs do well on other teams. Maybe it's our turn! Obviously, the job is Mit chell's to start fall practice.

I tend to agree with you, there is absolutely no hurry to redshirt him. Let him go through the fall and see where the cards fall. Yes, freshman QBs can be successful but we need to see what he does against college competition it's a little different at this level. Troy needs to be pushed to improve and be challanged and we need a back up just in case so let the competition begin.

I'm not too worried about a freshman starting. Remember - Troy started as a freshman. We appear to be in a similar situation now - except - we have a stronger program, a more experienced starting QB, and a front line that should be in much better shape to protect the QB than 2 years ago. Not sure who we'll have behind Mitchell, but I'd be shocked if we don't have at least 3 QB's ready to go on Aug. 30.
GO CATS!!! I can't wait!

Depth is the key. Jackson is a player. He will earn his stripes. Saw him and Miles this weekend both looked great. Miles told me he has been working at the starting RT spot. He is another hard worker, both come from a solid program.
