The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is the newest Internet/YouTube craze. But at Western Carolina University, it is more than an opportunity to raise money and shoot a quick, trendy video. And for one sophomore from Greenville, it is very personal.
Audrey LeClair is the daughter of Keith LeClair, a former Catamounts baseball star and coach who died from ALS in 2006. There is no cure for Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.
The challenge, with people shooting video of getting doused by ice buckets and challenging others to do the same while making a contribution to the ALS Association, has raised more than $62 million.
