We adjusted in 2nd half on D. We were stopped only once on offense. We still are getting gouged up the middle. I'm happy to get win #1. South Florida almost pulled the upset over Maryland and Chattanooga is 0-2. Although they have played 2 decent teams.

I didnt think Brevard was that bad, but we really should have been letting them score so much. Our offense pretty much had its way which was nice, but our first half defense left a lot to be desired. That said, other than a silly penalty on the missed Brevard field goal attempt that allowed them a touchdown, we would have held them scoreless in the second half. I think we looked decent against Brevard, and I think there is potential to be a lot better. Winning is contagious, and I know that the student body is really pumped even though it was a DII school. Hopefully we pick up a couple more wins and even more people want to come and support the Cats in a winning season!

Defense has now seen what needs to be done this year against the triple option, made some adjustments in the second half and slowed them down. Offense looked good and took what they were given, I thought we should have passed the time we were stopped at the 7 or 8, we had the size advantage on their d-backs but overall the offense is so much better than last year it surprises me. Special teams made adjustment and I loved the fact that we kicked deep on kickoffs and let the guys go make tackles, the only time the did well is when we miskicked out of bounds. The fake punt was a bad play on our part because we had no outside coverage. First blocked punt that I have seen since watching the team since 2011. I think this year we are going to make the necessary adjustments to correct what we need but let's see. Would like to see a 4-4 against the triple option teams we play so we have 2 inside linebackers to help with the dive and QB though but that is only my opinion. By the way I predicted we would win by 20 hoping we would hold them to 10 or under and score 30 or more and we did but I was hoping they would score less than they did. Still this is a good win, better that against Mars Hill and we this week is Catawba. Catawba plays either the spread or pro-style offense seem to be better at passing then rushing.

To start the second half, Brevard received the opening kick off, and returned it approx 20 yards. Then they put up a sustained drive that covered 18 plays, 78 yards, and took 11:09 minutes off the clock, resulting in a touchdown, that brought them within 7 points at 21-27. This is what the triple option is designed to do, eat up the clock, keep your defense on the field and your offense off the field. If we didn't have such a potent offense, we would have been in big trouble at that point.
Unfortunately, IMO, the defensive coaching staff does not know how to contain the triple option. This actually goes back 2 head coaches ago, WCU traditionally has been run over by the triple option running game (we're lucky GSU is gone, and only have to deal with the Citadel and Wofford now).
It's a hard offense to contain, but we should be more capable than we are, as we've faced the TO at least 3 times per season, for years.
It seems that the philosophy this year, will be to out-score the triple option teams, rather than present a disciplined defense against their running game.

I was excited we got the "W" but really frustrated with not being able to stop the triple option. I know we have had trouble with this in the past. I know Wofford and The Citadel run a similar style offense so hopefully this helps prepare us for those games but man I cant stand those long drives that eat up the clock and we seem to get confused a lot! I am also disappointed in the Fake punt that lead to a TD and the terrible officiating! Helms definitely was hit with a helmet to helmet but no call and the pass interference call where the ball was clearly uncatchable was pretty bad too. On the bright side I thought our Offense was really good and we still are missing Benson! After The S. Florida Game and this one I am really excited about us being able to put points on the board... Can't wait for Saturday!
