After two weeks of SoCon play, I don't see a real clear leader in the SoCon race.
FU is number one in the rankings due to a five point win over a second year team, so that doesn't mean much to me. They play PC this weekend, maybe we see the real FU then.
As far as the rest of the SoCon, I see real vulnerabilities in each team, and I don't see a game that the Cats can't win. I don't mean they WILL win them all, but I certainly think they will be contenders in them all. We haven't gained a lot of respect yet from the other conference foes, but they are starting to take notice of the Cats. A win at Furman will be BIG, if we pull it off.
I'm not going to stretch it, and predict a conference championship (wouldn't that be grand), but a 2nd or 3rd place finish is certainly not out of the realm of possibilities. Who would have thought that prior to the start of the season?
What do you think?

The big thing that will determine the fate of the Cats this season will be the defense. The offense looks a lot better than last year due primarily because the coaching staff has stopped rotating QBs. You can not give up 20 or more points per game and expect to be a conference contender.

If we can stop the scoring, we actually do have a chance at a really good season in my opinion. I admittedly have less Socon knowledge than probably everyone else here, but I've seen enough to know that we have the potential to be competitive as long as we can keep from being rolled by the opponent's offensive attack. I also think that the Cats are probably going to be underestimated a little bit until they get some Socon wins under their belts, and that could work to our advantage.

I agree with you, if we can clean up our run defense a little and we don't fall to the injury bug I think this can be a breakout season for us.

The Cats have a different mind set this year. They are going into these games thinking they are going to win, not hoping and not playing to be "competitive", but to win. Take care of business against Catawba this weekend and then they have two weeks to prepare for Furman. A game they can certainly win. The defense needs to step up and make some stops and the offense needs to continue to get better. Having KB back will open up the offense even more. Exciting times in the Whee!!

Did everyone notice that 3 out of 4 defensive line starters on the depth chart this week are new? I wonder if this is due to the poor play or injuries (cut blocking option teams).

I know that at least a couple of them are. It's strange, we play a FBS opponent and come home with no injuries. We play a Div. II opponent and have 3 injuries. Just a coincidence? I think the difference is the cut blocking. While legal, they can and do result in injuries, and cut blocking is a staple of triple option teams at any level.
