I was just thinking for the first time in many seasons, there is finally no way we can have a losing season in football, i hope we can beat UTC and win SoCon, but to not get ahead lets beat UTC, this will probably be the toughest and most meaningful game we play all year.
I was joking with a friend yesterday and got to thinking if we were in an FBS conference we would already be bowl eligible, lol.
I thought we would improve this year especially in the new SoCon and in Speir's 3rd year but i was only expecting 4, maybe 5 wins.
Go Cats!!!

I would be curious to hear some of the people who know more about long history of Catamount football say how the Chattanooga game compares to the biggest games of all-time for WCU. The stakes are so high for this game, it is a true battle for supremacy in the conference and it is happening at home. I knew that the team last year was more competitive than the win-loss ratio would suggest, but I didn't think that the team would learn to win so quickly. I thought we could compete with any team in the Socon, but I had no idea that we would be able to close against them. But here we are!

I just commented in one of the other threads. This UTC game is HUGE, but we also need to win it plus at least 1 more this year to make this probably the 2nd most impressive season we have ever had. There have only been 2 teams ever win 8 or more games at Western ('83 and '84), and we have only won 7 a couple of other times. So if we can get to 7-2 we are in the driver's seat. If we win and then beat at least one of the other of VMI and Samford, we do no worse than a tie for the conference championship (and maybe win it since we would have wins against anybody else who can possibly finish with only 1 conference loss). I am not 100% positive, but I don't think WCU has ever won the SoCon championship (even those great early 80s teams didn't).

The stakes are so high for this game, it is a true battle for supremacy in the conference and it is happening at home. In my opinion, all you have to do is look back on the regular season WCU - ASU games to get an idea of how big those games were. Read this, Battle for the Old Mountain Jug - WCU vs. ASU for an idea of the intensity of the rivarly. Too bad that Appy State has moved out, so today's students will not get to experience that rivarly, at least in football. To give you a better idea of how big a game this was.... TOP HOME CROWDS 1. APPALACHIAN STATE 1994 ..............................15,247 2. APPALACHIAN STATE 2004 ..............................14,714 3. APPALACHIAN STATE 2008 ............................. 14, 213 4. I agree that games against App were big draws, but not necessarily big games in terms of importance to our program. Let's face it - a number of those App games were years when we were downright awful. But it was a big crowd because the game was against basically our sister-school. Games that were really important are throughout this list, but I think this game against UTC is on par with just about any of them, with only a couple of these having playoff and/or conference championship hopes attached. What is really impressive to me are the 13k+ crowds when we really only had the East Side stands. Nearly 14k to see the Furman game in 1978 - that is crazy!!! I remember sitting on the steps of the Ramsey Center for that 1994 App Game (my Senior year at WCU). I am hopeful this staff and this team are the start of that being the norm going forward.

Thank you, that was a fun read and those numbers are truly indicative of how important that rivalry was to the school. I actually live about 30 minutes away from Boone so I knew how big the rivalry was but never knew much about the history behind it. It is really sad that such a historic rivalry is gone.

I know rivalry schools tend to happen and cant be forced but with the implications of this coming weekend I can see Chatty becoming a huge year in year out rivalry particulary if both schools continue to keep winning the way they currently are.
It wasnt that long ago Chatty was a bottom dweller too and they have done a god job turning around as well

Given how App fans over the last 8 years would say we weren't a rival anymore, here's an interesting stat. Since 2006, six of the 8 games have made the top 10 of stadium attendance for each school, WCU (2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012), App (2009 and 2011) The only other multiple top ten crowd school for App, The Citadel in 2008 and 2010.

^^^ Great stats, thank you. Anyone have our all time Win/Loss history with Chatt? Thank you, that was a fun read and those numbers are truly indicative of how important that rivalry was to the school. I actually live about 30 minutes away from Boone so I knew how big the rivalry was but never knew much about the history behind it. It is really sad that such a historic rivalry is gone. Great to see your interest. Its good for you newborn, baby catamounts to learn this history your first years in the Whee.
