I hope you are correct! I still feel Gumby is gonna get hurt running the ball. He's like a string bean. I understand what everyone is saying about the offense and that's just part of the equation but man every time he starts zig zagging and weaving up the field I cringe...especially when his helmet comes flying off or he's hit from behind. Anyway, I'll keep cringing I guess...hahaha I thought the same things when Armanti Edwards was playing for ASU. Edwards was 6' and 180 lbs, while Tyrie is 6'2" 180 lbs, very similar body build. Every time Edwards would run the ball, it looked as if he'd be killed when he was hit, but he'd bounce back up after run. I think the only thing that took him down one season, was a lawn mover one season. Tyrie seems to be very tough and durable to me. Some kids are just that way and are tougher than others. Some football players break every time they experience any contact. Tyrie does not seem to be that way. I say let him run when he needs to. If you take that away, we will lose most of our games like the 2-9 season a few years ago. Teams knew that we would not let him run so that took that whole phase of the game away. Makes no sense to take that away. I will say it again. It is football and it is a contact sport. If he gets hurt, it is the next man up. I hope and pray he does not get hurt but that is part of the deal. If you can't take it, you should not be playing.

Sam 2 things... The QB has to run if your going to run the read option. The coaches, imho, have preached the don’t get hurt. It hurts his game. If your going to do that lineup under center and pound folks. The interception you said was luck was an obvious off sides that Tyrie tried to make something happen, he knew there was a penalty on the D, no risk. That’s smart QB play. Welcome Mrs Curry. Your son has impressed my son and I’ve watched a lot of practices. He has a bright future at QB in this offense, imho. I know we were missing at least 2 starters in the secondary on D. DLine has one out with torn pec, he was for sure in the rotation. I still think we did some good things on D in the 4th. We knocked out their starting QB. I’m going to stay positive on the D. I’ve been here 5 years and it’s got to get us to the playoffs.

I just went back and watched the game again - and honestly it was still painful, but I think I have a few different takes on the game now: - I was too critical of the offense. We got in the redzone 5 times, and scored 4 TDs and 1 FG. Our 1st half drives were 6 plays/65 yds/FG, 12 plays/90 yds/TD, 12 plays/67 yds/FG, 5 plays/44 yds/TD, 5 plays/32 yds/only punt of half, 2 plays/7 yds/halftime. That is scoring points on 4 of 5 series (not counting running out the last 30 seconds of the half with the 10-second run-off from the false start penalty). 4 of 6 is the official count.
- We took a nap for the first 3 series in the 2nd half, but then when the offense needed it they went on 2 different 11 play drives (one for 75 yds and the other for 86 yds) resulting in 2 TDs. So for the game, in 9 possessions (11 if you count the one at the end of half/kneel at end of game), we scored 6 times. We only had 2 really bad possessions, and 3 TD drives that were at least 11 plays and at least 75 yards. On 76 total plays, we had 498 yards (6.55 yards per snap). I know it is a D2 team, but not sure how much more efficient we expect the O to be sans the two 3-and-out series in the 3rd quarter. I guess the way to be better is getting 2 or 3 long TDs (like a Detrez Newsome special 80+ yard TD scamper from last season). We missed a couple of deep throws that could have been those. We don't have Detrez, but I think with Holloway healthy we will be more than OK running the ball.
- The defense was much more about simply poor tackling/angles (fixable), broken coverage (fixable), and loss of concentration (like on the broken-play first TD pass - also fixable). Now being fixable and actually getting fixed are different things, and missed and/or broken tackles with a guy from Newberry for a 10 or 15 yard gain could be a 50 yard TD by a SoCon RB or WR.
- There was an evident over-confidence by the D it seemed - Newberry scored and got their attention, the D looked pretty good on about 3 series, they gave up the long run to give Newberry life that led to a FG.
- Both sides of the ball for the Cats really went into that "nap" mode after we got up 19-7. It comes across more rewatching the game that the Cats must have started feeling good about themselves after the first 4 series for each team - and it cost them over the next 4 series for both squads.
- We absolutely can't expect to beat even a decent team giving up 5 yards per carry and 451 yards. Our offense will only get 6 or 7 series against teams like Wofford and Citadel (and Furman and Mercer and....) giving up those kinds of rushing yards. so if we have games like that, scoring 4 times would have to be TDs to stay in the game.
- There were no turnovers and only 5 penalties (pretty low for WCU) - that is good coaching. The nap we took as a team and what felt like not a lot of urgency until the entire stadium and fanbase started thinking we really weren't going to win the game, the poor tackling/angles/broken coverage, etc. is on the coaches to address. I especially want to see the adjustments at halftime not taking all the way into the 4th quarter to show up.
- We have two weeks to prepare for GWU and VMI - who I think will not be as good as Newberry. If we don't look much better in those fixable categories (even if we get wins) in those 2 games, we will deservedly be underdogs in the rest of our games with maybe a "pick 'em" against ETSU. Note: VMI is now an "air raid" offense even though they don't have that kind of personnel. So if our secondary is where we have experience, we ***should*** look better against them (for what it is worth).
- I expect us to look better in the next two games (we better).
And hopefully these days are gone, but I can remember not too long ago where WCU would have no doubt lost on Saturday just as soon as they got down 20-19. I hate that it was against Newberry for the "optics" of an FCS vs D2 team, but I hope that it means the team will keep fighting when I have seen squads in the past that would not.

2 of those 3 drives we were 3 and out were 3 incomplete passes and punts. We must run the football.

Not if we go 3-and-out with 3 incomplete passes :-)
It is pretty cliche, but our offense is one that needs to stay on-schedule. A first-down incompletion or penalty doesn't necessarily doom us, but even as high-powered as we were last season there were an awful lot of bad drives where we went 3-and-out in what felt like 30 seconds of clock time - and those generally seemed like we picked a series to only throw it or because of a really bad 1st down play (either the play call, poor execution, penalty, etc.). We had roughly 4 series in a row like that on Saturday, and Coach even pointed directly to it in his post-game comments. Given the inexperience we have on Defense, even on unsuccessful drives I would like to see a few first downs and at least a little time coming off the clock for the D to get a rest.

for those who pointed out that Newberry has some talent, that may be true but not as much talent as Florida Tech who beat them 17-10 on Saturday.
Yeah, FL Tech.

for those who pointed out that Newberry has some talent, that may be true but not as much talent as Florida Tech who beat them 17-10 on Saturday. Yeah, FL Tech. It might be a long year for our Cats. We are all excited at the beginning of the season but a D2 team that is 0-2 gave us everything we wanted and could have beaten us. We have 63 scholarships to give at FCS D1 and Newberry can give 36 scholarships to give. I know we say how talented Newberry is and how they get allot of non-qualifiers that were recruited by SC and Clemson, but they only have 36 scholarships to give compared to our 63. Hopefully there will be much improvement from our first game to our second game. If not, we could be looking at another 2 or 3 win season. I hope I am wrong and we are sitting at 3-0 two weekends from now, but if we are not, it will be a long year. A very good FCS team would have beaten Newberry by 3 or 4 touchdowns. Just saying.
