I am not a believer in transitive properties in sports (i.e. a score in 2 different games by 2 teams against the same opponent is indicative of how those teams would do against each other). But the optics of it don't seem good - most of us were talking about how good Newberry looked for a D2 team and how many D1-caliber players they had, and they are now 0-2 with a loss to a D2 school where they were held to 265 total yards (had 450 against the Cats).
I hope it simply tells us that Western was overconfident, that we were down several players who will be difference-makers, etc. But no doubt it tells me Newberry is not nearly as good as we (me included) tried to make them out to be.
Doesn't change the fact we won game 1 and still have everything in front of us, but every week provides a little more perspective on how good you are and how good everybody else is. Maybe this was Newberry's stinker after now feeling overconfident after playing us.
The next 2 games are going to be very important for WCU and the tide of the season, and what yesterday's SoCon scores show there is opportunity for somebody to step into the top-half. But we need to look way better against GWU and VMI than we did against Newberry.
