Multiple student athletes at Furman University are connected to a sexual misconduct investigation, according to State Law Enforcement Division spokesman Tommy Crosby.

Furman Police Chief John Milby emailed a statement to campus Friday notifying students and staff that SLED is investigating a report of sexual misconduct involving multiple students at the school.

His agency is cooperating with the investigation, Milby wrote.

Bob Jones University has suspended students in relation to the investigation at Furman University, Bob Jones spokesman Randy Page said. The suspended Bob Jones students are not suspects, Page said in an email sent Monday night.

Sexual Assault Allegations Rock Furman Football Program

The alleged incidents at the Greenville, S.C.-based school were said to have taken place in the early morning hours of October 6, 2019 and were reported to the S.C. State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) that same day.

We were initially informed of the incident from our network of Greenville sources earlier this week when our founding editor, Will Folks, traveled to the Upstate on business.

According to these sources, the investigation into these allegations is being led by the Furman police department with assistance from SLED – which is required by the state law (§ 59-154-10) to assist in investigating alleged sexual assaults that occur on South Carolina’s college campuses. Colleges can opt to have the agency lead the investigation, but in this case Furman police are taking the lead.

GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. (WYFF) - The State Law Enforcement Division has turned over its investigation regarding accusations of sexual assaults at Furman University to the 13th Circuit Solicitor’s Office, according to solicitor Walt Wilkins.

WYFF News 4 Investigates reported two sexual assaults were reported at the North Village student apartments last year.

Officials would not say which file has been turned over.

WYFF News 4 Investigates obtained a Furman University police log that showed a rape was reported at 4:22 a.m. Oct. 6. The log shows the rape happened sometime between 1 a.m. and 4:20 a.m. in the North Village dorms on Furman's campus.

"SLED is actively participating in an investigation with Furman University police regarding accusations of sexual misconduct involving student-athletes at the university," according to Tommy Crosby, with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

"Specific details of the investigation are not available as this is an active and ongoing law enforcement proceeding," added Crosby.

WYFF News 4 Investigates reached out to the school’s athletic department for comment.

SLED is investigating both cases.

According to the Furman University 2019 Annual Fire Safety and Security Report, there were 23 reported rapes on Furman’s campus from 2016 to 2018.
