A couple of folks that have seen it first hand have told me it looks rather "plastic", one even said, like Legos. All agreed it really doesn't seem to quite line up with the architectural design that the university has adopted.

All agreed it really doesn't seem to quite line up with the architectural design that the university has adopted. I really don't think the Ramsey Center ever coordinated well with the architectural design the university accepted, then or now. However, in finding the materials that are going to accomplish the task of sealing up the leaks and being "Green" compliant, my guess is this exterior look was the best they could find. Overall, I think it will look just fine. No better or worse than the "Darth Vader" essence the original exterior had. I mean if we really wanted to get crafty, we could demo a small mountain nearby and completely cover the exterior with 5 foot thick local stone for a medieval fortress look. Then again, that would only match up to one other building on campus, Breese Gym. Heaven forbid they ever decide to level that building because I think it is one of the most historical and beautiful buildings on campus. Finally, I just hope the day comes when we can actually use the building, i.e. have fans gather in it!!

I have tried to picture this new look time and again, and I’m becoming more and more convinced that it’s going to be a whole lotta fugly! I know the repairs are necessary, but come on....The larger the building, the less pleasing the aesthetic of all red brick. But yet, the university insists that Scott and Walker MUST go due to aesthetics.....

I agree that Ramsey will not fit the aesthetics of the rest of the campus (never has) when complete and the pics so far are in fact "ugly". However, I don't thing Scott and Walker are coming down because of aesthetics, but the fact they don't have AC, are too large, and today's kids don't want to live in the '50 style dormitory. Given the choice between Walker & Scott and the new off campus housing (for about the same cost) with more amenities, where would you decide to reside. The only way to keep Walker and Scott would be to require more students to live on campus, which would result in more folks not selecting WCU to attend.

I've always figured they didn't necessarily need Ramsey to have the same look as the rest of the campus, since it's technically the REGIONAL Activity Center, with the goal (I'm guess never fully achieved) of having more non-WCU events. I kind of liked the old Darth Vader appearance, but maybe because as guy in his 50s, I grew up with the original Star Wars trilogy. I also don't hate the new exterior, but I only saw it partially complete in the spring. We'll be there next week to see it in person.

Technically, freshman AND sophomores are required to live on campus. They have just always waived the requirement for sophomores.
