I just recently finished a lengthy, informative phone conversation about one of our incoming student athletes and might I add it was actually delightful news to my surprise. I know for the last few years our football program has been in a bit of a funk, but the information that I received tonight gave me a little bit of hope. We have been debating who will lead the Cats on the field in 2020 season opener and from what I have gathered we have landed an absolute stud in quarterback Mark Wright! From what I gathered he was a big time qb out of high school with several D-1 offers and was gaining heavy power five interest and he got injured mid way in his senior season and then all the big boys (Oregon, South Carolina, Michigan State) to name a few all pulled back. He still was heavily recruited by Army, Air Force, Tulane and few others and the kid turned them all down to go play Juco for a year. Ended up at a fairly bad Juco program with a first year head coach and the coach ended up getting fired for allegedly stealing funds from the program. School basically let the entire coaching staff go immediately during the meat of the recruiting season and the kid never got properly recruited so he transfer from one of the worst football programs in Juco to arguably the best Juco program in Kansas and the nation for that matter. From there he lead a pretty good team to being the number one team in the country for several weeks basically over night. He was consider the absolute best qb in the KJCCC which is the best Juco conference in the country or the overall best in the country. Before ultimately committing to WCU he had between 10-15 D-1 offers and it came down to WCU, UMASS, Eastern Michigan, Rice and a Pac-12 team. I’m still not certain on how in the world WCU found him, recruited him and convinced him to even consider attending here. I guess In mid conversation I was floored that he ended up choosing us but nevertheless grateful. Lastly the currently specs on the kid is as follows: he’s 5’11 205lbs, very muscular, smart, 4.59 40 speed with a big/accurate arm! In short, my friend said the kid is a machine and a special talent. That he’s extremely loyal. He has the individual talent and leadership skills and capability to help lead us back to the good ole glory days! All in all, I guess this go around we might have to lay off Speir and his past recruiting woes this one time and actually congratulate him on this one, because I believe he just may have finally gotten this one right!

I have been told pretty much the exact same thing about Mark. Looking forward to seeing him play!

That sounds great on the offensive side of the football, but WCU has shown over the last two seasons the Cats can not outscore it's opponents and win games. The season will hang on the defensive unit. Defense wins championships (and in our case, wins games). Since Speir came to Cullowhee, he has emphasized offense to the determent of the defense. This has to change or it will result in the same old, same old (9-10 losses a season).

You are absolutely correct in your assessment over the past few years, but we’re hoping this year will be different. As I stated above, the offense should be electric and I’m trying to gather some detailed information about this new defensive unit as well.

And if they cancel the football season we will have tied for first in the SoCon for the first time in 3 decades!

You are absolutely correct in your assessment over the past few years, but we’re hoping this year will be different. This is not a put down, BUT - you do know the definition of insanity? Doing the same thing over and over and thinking the outcome will be different.

I totally understand you point BUT, we have a new OC, a new DC and a new incoming batch of promising player. I guess you can just call me somewhat optimistic!

To be a Cat football fan, you have to be an optimist.
