This is absolutely untrue! Dr. Starnes left in good standing. His students loved and admired his leadership so much that they actively assisted him in recruiting for each coming year! He received a great offer from Cobb County Schools allowing him to come home. It has been rough on him and his family these past nine years in commuting back and forth from his home in Acworth. He has one daughter and his wife is an architect. He brought great recognition to the band program and to the university and we should all wish him well and thank him for a job well done!

Funny how the info has come from several different people inside the band organization 🤷🏽♂️

My personal opinion......the band at WCU is way over the top.......reduce it by 50 percent and get over it.....it does promote our school like a winning football program would. I do not like their excessive noise during a game....sorry....but that is how I feel!

High school band members all over the southeast are aware of the POM reputation. And the recognition of marching in the Rose Bowl Parade and Macy's Thanksgiving Parade bring a swell of pride to my heart.

He never did move to Cullowhee. His home and family have always been in Cobb county. Maybe Western said move or leave. I don’t know if that has anything to do with it. Maybe he missed his family. Who know? I had heard that lately he did not spend much time in Cullowhee. Just my opinion, as I know nothing about his situation, but for him to maintain his family in Kennesaw all this time, tells me he at some point fairly early in his tenure at WCU decided this was not going to be his retirement job. I'm sure after 8 or 9 years commuting to Cullowhee (like Coach Hunter did), got kind of old, and he probably jumped at the opportunity to return to his home. As we all know, Cullowhee is not for everybody and apparently his family did not fall in love with the university or community. I think he did a good job while in Cullowhee, no one is going to be universally loved, so I'm sure he had his detractors as well as supporters. I just hope the next director takes the title "Director of Athletic Bands" (and what that should mean) a little more to heart than either Starnes or Bob did.

Yep for both of them it was about the band and they did not care about who the sports they were playing for He never did move to Cullowhee. His home and family have always been in Cobb county. Sounds as if people are jealous of the band's success. How about instead of cutting the band by 50% get a coach who can lead the football like the band has had for the past 20 years. There is no reason why the football team and band can't both be successful together... I do not like their excessive noise during a game....sorry....but that is how I feel! Sounds like the wine and cheese schools are more of a fit for you then.
