On Monday, the Catamounts initiated the first of two, four-week plans to prepare for the two scheduled football games set for Nov. 14 at Liberty and Nov. 21 at Eastern Kentucky.
The first of the two, month-long plans features a heavy-dose of consistent team conditioning and weight room workouts as WCU's pointed preparations resume. The second four-week period, which is slated to begin on Oct. 7, Speir compared to a typical spring football slate that will culminate with the pair of games at both Liberty and EKU. "That first four weeks, we're going to condition four days a week in the mornings as a team and we'll lift four days a week in the afternoons in different groups. We're using that time to just get ourselves back into football shape. We'll also start having our position and team meetings," Speir explained. "Then, starting in early October, we'll have a four-week window to practice three days a week, much like we do in the spring, spread it out with meetings on the off-days to get ready for our two games this fall."
WCU's preseason practice is slated to open with the first of two helmet-only sessions on Wednesday, Oct. 7 on the newly minted turf at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field. Additional practice information and a complete practice schedule, as well as broadcast information for both of WCU's fall football games, will be released in the coming weeks.

I am sure we will be working on fundamentals mostly and not prepping and scheming for our specific opponents during this time. That’s the message every year. After the first game coach will say, we need to focus on the Cats not beating the Cats and we need to get back to basics and simplify our schemes so our players can play fast. Blah blah. I hope I am wrong and that we do become an elite FCS team but if history is any indication...

All I know is Mark Speir and staff really need to use their time wisely and watch plenty of film on our two upcoming opponents.
They have plenty of time to prepare and implement a solid game plan, and hopefully the team can make a couple of solid showings.
Just give us some momentum for the Spring season that is tentatively planned for 2021.
My fear is we get blown out both games, then the Speir excuse train starts as follows:
1) First game nerves.
2) Couldn't decide on a starting QB.
3) Team is young.
4) Practice injuries.
5)Trying to implement a new defensive scheme.
The list will go on an on, we have all heard it over and over, or as you say - Blah, Blah, Blah!
Hope our DC and staff put an improved product on the field, that would help more than anything!
Speir, it is time to put up, or shut up!

I agree on everything you said. The thing that irks me about Mark is he always has excuses on why they lose. Either win or step down. Now I know he won't because who walks away with free money but if I was a coach I would be embarrassed to know everyone knows I am a dud and don't know how to coach myself out of a brown paper bag. I hold no hope for him to turn the program around and just hope for a buy out every year All I know is Mark Speir and staff really need to use their time wisely and watch plenty of film on our two upcoming opponents.

Maybe they can find a "loop hole" and get rid of him after the Fall games.

Watching App , Marshall, Coastal Carolina and now Elon and Campbell just makes me sick. Why not move up and get beat by these guys rather than losing to GW, WOFFORD, FURMAN and just amout North Greenville. By the way we are the same size as Marshall and could pack a 25,000 stadium to watch us get beat by these guys.

You have to want it and right now and in the past WCU did not want it. Hopefully Alex Gary, being a former Catamount player, will make the strides to make us want it Watching App , Marshall, Coastal Carolina and now Elon and Campbell just makes me sick. But you can't just decide you want to "move up" and it magically happens. Not really sure what is meant including Elon and Campbell since they play at the same level we do (although I would imagine the comment is about how they are rising while WCU continues to basically stand still). But App and Marshall had a ton of success and a plan, and Coastal was fortunate to have a billionaire coach who afforded them a path forward.
WCU will have to start seeing success, then prove we can raise money/fill seats at a different level, and so on. Somewhat of a chicken-and-egg scenario, but these other schools figured out a way. Then maybe if an opening comes along a conference move would be something that we could think about being in contention for, but right now that is so far away it is not even worth dreaming about.

Agree. Westerns leadership is happy staying where we are and will not even fully fund the program at an FCS or SoCon level. I am 58 years old and if I live to 90 years old, I will not see us move up or fully fund the program at the current level in my lifetime. There is no vision or direction.
