Pretty interesting numbers. We have been hitting “record” enrollment numbers, but 11 of the 16 UNC system schools are growing faster than we are (at least percentage-wise). Seems like it won’t be too long before App is fully twice our size.
I don’t live in NC now, so what is going on with the drop at UNCA?

The year before was 4.5% growth for WCU. So you can’t really tell anything about trend from one year.

I have always stated that WCU would slow walk increasing enrollment as long as they could get away with it.

With the number of applications WCU receives and the low number of acceptance, WCU could have as large a freshman class as they want, I would like to see it increase a little faster. With all the new housing being built off-campus, I'm sure private industry would meet any demands for new housing.

If we grow faster, standards will go down and eventually we will get less qualified applicants. Years ago before the mid 90s our acceptance rate was very high and we got about 3500 to 4000 applicants per year. Bardo came in 1995 and in 1996 and he set up the honors college and raised the admission and academic standards and guess what happened. We started getting more applications from more qualified students. There is a reason that we now get more than 18000 applicants per year. It is because, we raised standards and when you raise standards you get more applications. If we were to lower the admission standards, in a few years, we would get less applications and we would have to take a larger percentage of students to maintain the growth which would eventually be unsustainable. We need to slowly raise standards and make the WCU degree more valuable and keep growing with more qualified students. This is not my opinion. There are tons of studies and literature that have proven that to increase the demand for a university education, you raise standards which leads to growth. Cutting standards does the opposite. Which means letting in less qualified students to grow enrollment in the short term leads to declines in enrollment in the long run.

You are not lowering standards, just just by increasing the freshman class by a reasonable number. If you don't increase the numbers, you remain at the same number of students forever. HOW ELSE DO YOU GROW THE UNIVERSITY, except by increasing the size of the freshman class? Look how ASU has grown, NOW over 20k students. Less than 20 years ago, WCU and ASU were almost the same size. They are ranked #3 by US News college ranking of public schools in the south, while WCU comes in at #10. It can be done, someone just has to do it. www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/regional-universities-south/top-publicIt's folks like you, and the leadership of the university that have held back WCU's growth over the years, as well as athletics at WCU. It's way past time for a NEW way of thinking to take over at Western Carolina.

That is a fact and not an opinion.
