Tuesday, December 1, 2020Three out of conference games are on the schedule for the first day of December. The Spartans will face Prairie View A&M at 3 p.m. inside of Louisville's KFC Yum! Center Tuesday. The Panthers are the reigning two-time champions from the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). They are also the SWAC preseason favorites. The VMI Keydets will face Big South rival, Longwood at Cameron Hall at 5 pm. The Keydets had been searching for a replacement after Lancaster Bible could not make the trip due to COVID-19 issues and the game was canceled. Samford will host Div. Winthrop is taking their place, so Winthrop and UNCG will play at 8:30 pm today in Louisville, KY VMI and Samford were winners last night, however in the premiere game of the night, the highly touted Spartans of UNCG were humbled by the high flying Eagles of Winthrop. Sampford pulled off a 93-73 win over their second non-DI opponent. The Keydets did their part in handling the other Big South opponent, Longwood. in the night cap, the Eagles shot 42 percent in the 2nd half while holding the Spartans to 34 percent and just 3-for-13 behind the arc. Turnovers played a big part of the game, as the Eagles managed 19 points off 20 UNCG turnovers while the Spartans only had 10 points off 18 Winthrop turnovers. |

The Duke's led the entire game, as the Spartan stayed within reach, but could not overcome Duquesne's 75.8% free throw shooting (25 of 33) off 25 personal fouls. Furman remained unbeaten with an 89-49 win over South Wesleyan. |

The big game ended up being the Citadel's win over NC A&T, 78-70. The Bulldogs pulled off their first D1 win of the season, after being down by 10 at the half. Number 16 Virginia Tech barley escaped a visit from the VMI Keydets, by a final score of 57-64. |

Five wins! Furman and Samford pull off two excellent wins on the road today, with the Paladins walking away from the Cougars in Charleston, and Samford posting a 96-83 victory in Nashville, home of the Belmont Bruins. Mike Bothwell scored a game-high 26 points as Furman easily defeated the College of Charleston 81-57 on Saturday. While Massy Ratings only gave the Bulldogs a 14% chance of winning the game against Belmont, but the Bulldogs led by double digits most of the game. Mercer led 42-29 over Columbia International and never looked back, finishing off with an 88-62 victory. The Citadel hit the century mark in a win over Toccoa Falls in a 100-58 final score. The Mocs hosted Northern Kentucky, as David Jean-Baptiste tied his career-high with 25 points as Chattanooga beat Northern Kentucky 79-72 on Saturday. |

Only two games on Sunday after a very strong Saturday of SoCon winning. Tennessee Tech, from the OVC, visits Cullowhee, while Div. II South Wesleyan visits Macon, Ga. to face the Mercer Bears. The Wofford/Presbertian game that was also scheduled has been canceled due to Covid 19.

It was a very good weekend for the Southern Conference. First today, the Catamounts picked up an over-time win against the Golden Eagles of Tennessee Tech, while Mercer took home a win over South Wesleyan in Macon. Mason Faulkner was the hero today for the Catamounts as the game's top scorer, he also made a clutch three point basket with time expiring in overtime to give the Catamounts a 1 point win over Tennessee Tech. Mercer led 47-36 at the half, and never fell behind in the second have for a 96-85 over South Wesleyan. |
