This is the best thread on the board. Hopefully nobody will figure out a way to tie the decline of beach music and the shag to our lack of success in football and past administration decisions

Another of my favorite songs is from the Temptations, it was their first #1 hit, My Girl, released in 1965.
Did you know, "My Girl" was written by Smoky Robinson? He wrote it for himself and the Miracles to record, but after hearing David Ruffin who had joined the Temptations as a replacement for former Temptation Elbridge Bryant, Robinson thought that My Girl was the perfect song for Ruffin's voice.
According to Robinson, he allowed the group to create their own background vocals "because they were so great at background vocals". The Temptations came up with boosts like "hey hey hey" and a series of "my girls" that echo David's vocal."
The opening bass notes are recognized around the world.... and here they are......

The Platters - The Great Pretender
Did you know? The Platters wrote the lyrics to The Pretender in the washroom of the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas. (Doo Wop groups often practiced in washrooms because of the acoustics.) Tony Williams was the lead singer of The Platters, and the song went to number one on the Billboard charts.

I came to Western from south Florida, and when people were talking about "beach music" I was like, "Yeah - the Beach Boys, Jan & Dean!" I got some weird looks! Totally didn't get it - until I went to Myrtle for spring break. Oh yeah!!! link

The "Iceman" Jerry Butler - He Don't Love You ( Like I Love You)
The original title of the song was "He Will Break Your Heart". It was written by Jerry Butler, Calvin Carter, and Curtis Mayfield. The song was recorded by Butler and released as a single in 1960, where it peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and No. 3 on the Cash Box Top 100. In addition, Butler's recording spent seven non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the U.S. R&B chart.

Another one of my favorites by Little Anthony & The Imperials - "Going Out Of My Head".
It was 1964 when Going Out of My Head was released, written by Teddy Randazzo and Bobby Weinstein. Randazzo, a childhood friend of the group, wrote the song especially for them, having also supplied the group with their previous Top 20 Hit "I'm on the Outside (Looking In)" The Little Anthony and the Imperials original recording is the best-known version of the song, although it has since been covered by many other artists.
