For something a little different....
It was 1964 and one of my favorites and probably one of the best Carolina Beach Music songs ever recorded "39-21-40 Shape" by the Showmen (General Norman Johnson - Chairmen of the Board).
It was mistakenly printed on the label as "39-21-46" and this soon surpassed the official title. Listen to this great song from the 60s....
Do you know how to shag, it's a Carolina Beach pastime..... OD, Myrtle Beach back in the day.....
What's one of your favorites from the past?

I was playing 39-21-46 off your post and my wife walked in the room and started Shagin'. We started talking about The Pad, Fat Harold's, the Spanish Galleon, the Barrel and other OD spots. We went to the Spanish Galleon several years ago and a former WCU linebacker, Paul Abraham, was the manager. That's where the Shag Hall of Fame is located and he (Abe) gave us the royal tour. Every time I play golf in the Myrtle Beach area, I take my buddies to Fat Harold's. A lot of them fall in love with the music and The Shag. At one time, I had all of General Johnson and the Chairmen of the Board 45s, I have several Beach Music CDs that I play on trips. Brings back a lot of great memories from my undergrad days in Cullowhee...the juke book in the old Student Union Building...the Town House juke box. "I Love Beach Music...I have and I always will."

more beach music.... this time the Drifters singing "Under the Boardwalk" from 1964
bet you didn't know? The song was set to be recorded on May 21, 1964, but the band's lead singer, Rudy Lewis, died the night before the recording. Lewis had sung lead on most of their hits since the 1960 departure of Ben E. King, including "Up on the Roof". Rather than reschedule the studio session the lead on "Under the Boardwalk" was given to the group's other vocalist Johnny Moore, who had returned to the group in April 1963.
There are two versions of the song. The mono 45 USA released version contains the line "We'll be falling in love". However, on the stereo album version, the line "We'll be making love" is sung. These are two entirely different recordings, not edits of one another, as the line "on a blanket with my baby is where I'll be" is sung differently in each version. The version appearing on the Drifters' Golden Hits compilation is a composite of the two, using "making love" in the first two choruses and "falling in love" in the third. Because of the line "making love" several radio stations banned the song.

I started getting into Carolina beach music on campus as WWCU would mix it in quite a bit. There was also the annual remote from Scott Beach in the spring which was laid out right below my dorm room window.
After graduation my buddies and I would take an annual Memorial Day weekend trip to Myrtle and hit all the spots. I used to see Abe all the time- I want to say he started out there as a bouncer. We used to go to The Afterdeck or Galleon to see Chairmen of The Board while we were in town. My bachelor party in '92 started at Fat Harold's.
I'd Rather Be In Carolina should replace The Old North State as our state song. Myrtle Beach Days is one of my faves. Summertime's Calling Me always gives me a sense of melancholy when I hear it.
Check out some of Tim Cashion's stuff on YouTube for his modern, yet old school vibe. He's a Charlotte boy, went to App for a bit, plays keyboards with Grand Funk now.
