It's probably a good thing for Coach K.
He hasn't been on top of his game for the last few years, sometimes folks don't know when to hang up their whistle. To me, it's better to go out on top, rather than have many years of mediocre seasons before you retire.

All things are relative, and Duke has seemed like they have been "down" but if you look at their records the last several seasons it is hard to say that the Dookies are that bad: Year | Record | ACC finish | NCAA finish | 2014-2015 | 35-4 | 2nd | Champions | 2015-2016 | 25-11 | T-5th | Sweet 16 | 2016-2017 | 28-9 | 5th | Round of 32 | 2017-2018 | 29-8 | 2nd | Elite 8 | 2018-2019 | 32-6 | 3rd | Elite 8 | 2019-2020 | 25-6 | T-2nd | No tourney | 2020-2021 | 13-11 | 10th | Didn't qualify |
Clearly this last season was awful, and I have always heard comments like Duke should win every year because they have the best talent. But of course I heard the same thing about Dean Smith, or Calipari in a number of years when Kentucky had much of the top incoming talent. Maybe this past season was an indication of what was to come in Durham, but I'd say the previous 6 seasons didn't really show that Duke was going downhill. Duke was so good for so long, that only having 1 Final Four appearance (and a championship) in the last 7 years makes you think that they were struggling. I think it is more like tarcat said and that many of the "old-timer" coaches like Roy and K are going to simply step aside rather than having to adapt to how the landscape has changed.
