I don't think the talent and teams in the area are highly thought of outside from a handful of players

I don't think the talent and teams in the area are highly thought of outside from a handful of players Can be slim pickings some years, but not always. The Smoky Mountain 1-A produced Health Shuler and Carl Pickens, for example. Off the top of my head, three of our recent strong starters were from the west: Micah Nelson, Neyland Walker (who wasn't on the spring roster, BTW) and Calvin Jones. If they're good enough, we should recruit them, for reasons that extend beyond winning.

Back in the day, the od Sylva Webster HS produced some national talent. The problem is, the really good ones want to go to the P5 schools. I always thought if we could win some conference championships, we could get some of those kids. Maybe in my lifetime we will have a consistently winning football team. If you just look at our record from the outside, Catamount football is not perceived strong. I truly believe if Coach Bell can’t do it, it cannot be done. If he can’t get it done, we should save our money and do away with football because Coach Bell has won everywhere else. Why throw good money after bad.

If he can’t get it done, we should save our money and do away with football because Coach Bell has won everywhere else. Why throw good money after bad.You know that the current, as well as all the past dwellers of the white building, want a football team. They don't consider it throwing good money after bad, they just want the "check mark" in that blank that football brings to the university's public façade. Winning would be a nice bonus, but its not necessary in their eyes, as they are only going to spend enough money to keep football afloat, as football is NOT the front porch for Western Carolina, never has been, never will be. The administration is happy with the number of student applications per year that currently comes into the white building, and does not need athletics or football to bump up those numbers. That - is why they have always been willing to "throw good money after bad" for football since football was established at WCU in 1931.
