One of the golden rules.... no politics, no religion - and certainly not bashing religion!!!!!! Sorry did not mean to bash anyone’s religion or hurt anyone’s feelings. I guess all I can say is that gambling is legal on the Cherokee reservation and that partnering with Harrah’s is no different than partnering with Ingles or any other legitimate American business. I would hope that most thinking people can keep their religion out of politics as separation of church and state is part of the Constitution and the American fabric. So no matter what I believe or was taught was right or wrong does not give me any right to impose what I believe on any State organization including WCU just because I am a steward of WCU. Imposing what I believe is just plain un-American based on the Constitution. That applies to everyone including me. Honestly though, I do not believe we have anyone on the BOT or the administration that would block Harrahs from donating a building or substantial funds to WCU. Also, Western not taking money from Harrahs is like Western coming out against the Eastern Band of Cherokee because the casino benefits that tribe. We would never do that. I agree, I see nothing wrong with WCU accepting donations from Harrahs, however I do realize that some may feel it to be inappropriate and certainly respect that opinion. However, this is not the place to make the arguments for or against, based on politics or religion.

It’s a no brainer to partner with Harrahs. I have never heard anyone come out against it. Has anyone ever heard anyone on the BOT or admin say no? I fixed it. - Admin Dr. Belcher was the one who was against having a partnership with Harrah’s. That’s when everything they did with us before stopped.

Let’s hope that we can get it started back up with them. It is a legal enterprise that benefits the Eastern Band of the Cherokee. If we choose not to partner with Harrah’s, I think we are discriminating against the Cherokee people. At least that is my take. I thought Western proclaims to support the Native American population that are indigenous to Western North Carolina. By not partnering with Harrahs is like not partnering with the Cherokee.

Sorry if you don't like it, but that's the way the cookie crumbles and it's according to the terms of service of the board. You can always join Cole Spivey's board if you think you'll get a better outcome.

You can always join Cole Spivey's board if you think you'll get a better outcome. I may have this wrong but are you saying that some folks think gambling is a sin no matter if it is legal and sanctioned by the federal and state government. I don’t think it is politics, because gambling and other vices and sins are open to all parties. Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, Communists, etc. all sin and partake in all the vices. Probably equally but I have not done a survey. Cussing, drinking, womanizing, sloth, envy, jealousy, etc. are all non-political the way I see it. People that don’t think that way scare me. It has to be the religion thing and seriously I did not mean to offend anyone. If a person is against something morally, then I respect their right. I just remember something I learned a long time ago. In Gods eyes, all sin is equal and he loves us all despite our brokenness. I personally have never been in Harrah’s or gambled in a Casino, but I know people who do and some of them go to my church.
