The NCAA spent $68 million on legal counsel in the 2019-20 fiscal year. Ten of its employees made more than $500,000 Pres. Mark Emmert topping that list with $2.9 million. ------------------------------- Mark Emmert made $2.9 million as NCAA's revenue dropped more than 50 percent
NCAA president Mark Emmert made $2.9 million during the 2019-2020 fiscal year, a time period when pandemic-related closures caused the organization's revenue to drop by more than 50 percent. The organization brought in $521 million between Sept. 1, 2019 and Aug. 31, 2020, down from more than $1 billion in revenue the previous fiscal year, according to tax returns provided to ESPN Monday. Much of that missing revenue was due to the cancellation of March Madness and other national championship events due to COVID-19. The NCAA's expenses also dropped by nearly 40 percent during that same time period. Emmert and other top officials at the NCAA reported a slight increase in pay during the year. Donald Remy, who was recently confirmed for a position in the Biden administration, made $1.7 million as the NCAA's chief operation officer during the 2019-20 year. Executive vice president Stan Wilcox also made $1.3 million. more.... www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/31844825/mark-emmert-made-29-million-ncaa-revenue-dropped-more-50-percent

My only response - not defense - is that there are probably a lot of Big 5 schools with more than 10 athletics employees that make more than $500,000.

If we are going to call out leadership compensation, then look at university chancellors, presidents and revenue generating coaches. For those of you curious about the UNC system, it's public info that you can access here. Here's the top 25 in the system. Attachments:

Looks like NC State is NOT getting their money’s worth coaching wise and it appears all the money stays about 20 miles around Raleigh. It has been that way forever. Our 2 “flagship schools” are and have always been overrated in the public eye. Cotton Robinson, God rest his soul always said that the money always stayed within 20 miles of Raleigh. ECU because of their political clout have gotten a lot of the cash in the last 25 years but other than that, the rest of us get the crumbs. Our leadership needs to push for a medical school in the worst way but unfortunately they are not that smart and don’t have the necessary vision. The medical school for Western North Carolina will eventually go to App while our leadership stand around patting themselves on the back.

There must be some real gravy in the UNC head coaching pay plan as he has two assistants making $720,000, while he is at $600k. Endorsements, housing and car, plus incentives for playing more than 8 games in a season (JK). But seriously - interesting that his base salary is 1/3 of the NCSU coach & 20% less than his two top assistants.

If you recall, Bardo was pushing for and working on getting a medical school at WCU. It was the powers at UNC-CH that tanked it with their deep political connections. This is in stark contrast to NCSU who was very supportive of getting an engineering school established at WCU. Make no bones about it, if UNC had their way, even the medical school at ECU would get shut down so all medical school training would go through CH.

Well, when you lose 50% of you income, then have those kind of payouts, it's a problem.

As for Mack Brown, that $600k is just what comes from the state budget. I would expect he gets plenty of even “salary” that comes from the Rams Club and then all kinds of endorsement and other income. The state just tracks what comes from state-appropriated dollars in those numbers being shown. Here is an article about his extension showing that his deal is worth $3.5M chapelboro.com/sports/unc-sports/unc-football/unc-agrees-to-contract-extensions-with-mack-brown-and-assistant-coachesAlso note that Lonnie Galloway is mentioned, getting promoted and I assume a 3-yr deal as part of that extension.

I was surprised to see two names on the WCU list that are still getting a salary from WCU. The two names are John Wiley($102,000) and John Holt($44,723.00).
GO CATS/WCU42/EKU 38
