What is the attraction for ASUN football as a conference sport? You have EKU and Jax State abandoning Ohio Valley conference, Kennesaw leaving Big South, Central Arkansas leaving Southland, and wasn't North Alabama briefly in OVC after moving up from D-II? That's five conference games and SIX OOC games in a season. Doesn't sound exciting or making a big deal to win the conference - let alone an intra-conference rivalry.

The attraction for ASUN football is that it's an all-public school football league, made up of a somewhat tight footprint of like-minded schools, with football as their priority.
They were hoping to pull in Chattanooga (and were also interested in ETSU and WCU) and were pretty sure that the Mocs will make a move to the ASUN because of the things listed above. The Mocs, like the Catamounts, currently don't have a heated rival in the SoCon. ETSU fills that bill somewhat in basketball, but it's not really a hot rivalry in football.

Central Arkansas is a bit of a ride - actually would be farther than any SoCon team for us (10 hour ride from Cullowhee vs. about 5 to Birmingham, Lexington or Charleston). The others would not be bad however & I'd love to have Kennesaw as a conference team since I can be on campus in about 15 minutes. I was mistaken in my first post though. Five team conference makes for FOUR conference football games. Ugh. Of course being the champion and going to the playoffs has a statistically better chance in a five team league.

That's one of the reason they wanted UTC, hoping that ETSU & WCU would then tag along giving them eight football members.

I did a little research and found this article from February of this year:
While Kennesaw State is a member of the ASUN Conference in most sports, its participation in football will have to wait until 2022.
The conference announced on that an alliance between the ASUN and Western Athletic Conference had been formed for the fall 2021 football season. The partnership, called the AQ7, will play a six-game round-robin schedule.
The AQ7 will consist of new ASUN members Jacksonville State, Eastern Kentucky and Central Arkansas, along with new WAC members Abilene Christian, Lamar, Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin. Two other future WAC members — Dixie State and Tarleton State — will compete as part of the round-robin schedule but will not be eligible for the group’s automatic bid for the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs because of their transitional status from Division II.
