My question come from just looking at freshmen class pictures, this season's class looks smaller. Has WCU released enrollment figures yet? I haven't run across any...... Here's a past freshman class picture - Here's the incoming freshman class picture

Here's a past freshman class picture - Probably has to do with Covid, Im sure they didn't want them to all bunch up, I doubt that the enrollment dropped that much. Here's the incoming freshman class picture

Dr. Brown has said freshman enrollment is down a little from previous years.

Dr. Brown has said freshman enrollment is down a little from previous years. Those pictures don't look like a little to me, but a sizable number. With the lower tuition, I don't understand this. Just think how it would be if the students had to pay full tuition.

Best I can tell this is the 2121 accepted students. For the class of 2020, I believe we accepted 69% from ou applicant pool wchich was above out typical acceptance rate of 40%. This year (2021) we are getting back to our typical 40% level which is where we should be. Double click on below to enlarge. In order to keep growing and grow our applicant pool, we have to keep our standards high. It is basic supply and demand. If we relax our standards, then less people will apply and we would have to accept more and more of a smaller pool each year which is not sustainable. To grow the right way, we should continually make a Western education more valuable by increasing standards which will in turn grow our applicant Pool which will allow us to attract more better students. If you throw the doors open, we would grow for 2 or 3 years and then our applicant pool would shrink and we would have to continue to have to accept more and more less qualified students. Thank God for John Bardo who understood this in 1996 and set us on the correct path. In 1996 we had less than 3500 students apply to Western and now we have close to 20,000 per year. It is all because we raised standards. So if we have fewer freshmen for a year or 2, no big deal as long as we do not relax standards because we have the right strategy for the log run. Also, maybe on picture day for 2025, that is all that showed up. It is nor mandatory.

I understand what you are saying, and don't disagree with most of your assumptions, however the student "pool" is rapidly shrinking. However, with a shrinking pool of college bound students, it's inevitable that growth will not continue for many/most colleges.

Here's a past freshman class picture - Here's the incoming freshman class picture The assumption here is that all the incoming freshman show up for the picture. I suspect the attendance percentage is a factor here. That said, we'll know what the enrollment is within a couple of weeks as the official number won't be finalized for a couple of weeks. On side note to mention is something that Dr Belcher would talk about, the overall number of students available in future years is at a peak and will drop over the next 10+ years. That means less supply of students to fill the seats and greater pressure on colleges and universities to fill said seats. IMHO this is one of the hidden drivers in the P5/G5 conferences "money grab" tactics along with their general greediness.
