I think most people are being very positive. Are you reading the same thread the rest of us are?

i don't think people are being negative on here. I think people just saw that the mistakes cost us a win and are disappointed. That is it. I was disappointed not in the play of the team but because i know two mistakes cost us a winnable game. The Socon looks very very tough this year so we need all the wins we can get before conf play as the Socon will be a battle field

Just disappointed the outcome was a loss, when a win was within reach

Jerry, Is there a snipit or somewhere where I can listen to just Bell's postgame comments. I know I can go to CSN and fastforward all the way to the end but I as I was leaving the game last night (didn't stay for fireworks) I tried to listen on the road and as I got to about the Sonic area in Sylva the radio on 90.5 went static until about the McDonald's in Sylva and so I missed a huge portion of the interview. Go to the main page of catamountsports.com and scroll down to "TOP VIDEOS", Coach Bell's post game comments are on the first video...

I attended the game Saturday & here are a few of my humble comments: Offense 1. The QB did a great job of managing the Offense. 2. The QB stayed calm under pressure & never started running around like our previous QBs in the recent past. 3. The QB also demonstrated that he can successfully run with the ball. 4. The QB also demonstrated that he can throw the the short passes and throw the long ball. 5. The running backs were great & they hit the holes quickly with great breakaway speed. 6. The running backs took care of the football & kept churning for extra yards. 7. The Offensive Line played well & gave the QB time to throw the football. 8. The Offensive Line did an outstanding job protecting the QB during the entire game. 9. The tight ends were used effectively & added another dimension to the passing game. 10. Coach Bell did a great job of calling the plays. He mixed up the run game with the passing game very effectively. 11. When we got inside the red zone, I wished we had run the ball a little more. 12. Overall, when you rush for 200 yards & pass for around 300 yards, your offense has been effective. Defense 1. The Defensive Line played very well. 2. They clogged up the center of the line & forced EKU to run outside of the tackles and pass more. 3. The Defensive Line played bigger & handle the 300 lb Offensive Line well. 4. The only way EKU opened up the middle was in short yardage situations & they used wedge blocking to accomplish the room for their runners to score. 5. The Linebackers were great & they were very quick. 6. They also put some licks on the EKU runners. Very impressed with their aggressiveness & speed to locate the ball. 7. I also liked the substitution of players on the Defensive Line & on the Offensive Line. Kept fresh people on the field & they did not look gassed out in the 4th Quarter. 8. The Secondary played well for the most part but did not cover well on pass plays. 9. I do not like 5’10” Cornerbacks because they can be easily taken advantage of on pass plays when the other team is using taller wide receivers. 10. I like using 2 Safeties in the Defensive Backfield. 11. I also liked that Coach Bell used 4 Down Linemen on defense instead of 3 Down Linemen for most of the game. 12. I also liked the fact that the DC moved the line around prior to the snap to confuse the EKU Offensive Linemen blocking schemes. Special Teams 1. I thought the Special Teams played light years ahead of the previous years. 2. They were quick & got to the ball carrier in a hurry. 3. On Special Teams & on Defense, I saw no arm tackling like in previous years. 4. The Kicking was outstanding all the way to the 1 second field go try at the end of the 4th Quarter. 5. Our Kickoff Man put the ball in the end zone on just about every kick attempt. That really helps your Special Teams. In summary, This years team is light years ahead of Coach Speir Teams. They have speed, strength, size, depth, & better overall athleticism than the recent past. Play Calling is so much better & the stat numbers show the results. What is most impressive is the fact that Coach Bell put this team together & has had only a few weeks to work with them. One thing that has to be taken care of is stupid penalties & Pass Defense. Folks, that is the way I saw it Saturday.
PS: I think that EKU would be a top tier team in the SoCon.

The only thing I would disagree on is about the quarterback staying calm. The second interception he threw, he panicked on a first down play and through the ball right to the defense instead of taking a sack or throwing the ball to the sideline.
Otherwise, I like the assessment and feel way better about this year's team in comparison to the Spier years

However, the lack of a good pass defense is what cost us the game. I liked the way that the QB marched the team down the field to score the 28th point and gave the team a chance to tie the game. The Field Goal attempt just barely missed under the crossbar. I still think the QB stayed in the pocket very well & did not let the pressure get to him for 95+% of the game. Thanks for your comments.

Jim - something about you and the #11 in your assessment. I thought most of what you said was spot-on, but those two were things that really stood out to me. Early in the game we hadn’t really tried to run the ball. I would love to have those first two series back with the way we were running the ball later in the game. Two TDs on those drives and we very well might have been off to the races.
And 4 DL - or maybe it was technically a stand-up end/OLB who we brought up to the line of scrimmage. We have all said for the past several years that playing so many run-first teams in conference we needed bigger, better, and more aggressive defensive line play and I felt like we got that on Saturday.
Nobody is ever happy with a loss, but this team is no doubt headed in the right direction.

Just for comparison sake what does everyone think EKU would place if in the Socon? Just trying to a quick temp check of how we might do in conference play. Also the other game that has my ears perked up is the GW game. They are a good team. They almost beat Ga. Southern. Not counting the Oklahoma game we will have one tough conference game against Samford before going to Boiling Springs to play GW
