I thought last week you were high on K. Bell Samford lost their game & most SC teams got beat. Furman again did not play a good football team. Alabama beat Mercer & Coach Sabin did not try to run the score up like Oklahoma did on Western. I hope the first two losses do not impact the confidence level of this ball club. I also think the SoCon is weak this fall. I don’t see any team in the league that is head & shoulders over the rest of the conference. I also watched the App State game & I saw Helms starting at the right guard & Mark Speir on the sideline right behind the Head Coach. It is still hard for me to see how far App State has come with their Football Program and how low Western’s Football is now. If Bell turns Western around, it will be a miracle.

I did not pay to watch the game but i do have a question. Did Lincoln Riley run the score up or was it just Western could not stop anything they put on the field?

More the latter, it seems to me. We can’t really ask our defense to be on the field as much as they were, and while we moved the ball some in the fourth quarter, we gave up a couple of turnovers as well, and those led to scores.

I agree with you about the conference being down this year based on the performance of Chatt, Samford and VMI to start the season. It seems the SoCon is down every year. Just look at the conference playoff record since App and Ga Southern left. ETSU might turn out to be the team to beat. I do believe that Kerwin Bell will turn things around at Western as long as their is a financial commitment to improve facilities by the administration that is real. Kerwin Bell is really the ONLY successful head coach that Western has ever hired and he is a proven winner. Coach Bell was hired at the end of June so I think it is too early to give up on him. Let him have at least 3 recruiting classes before we give up on him. I will say this. Since Bell has won everywhere he has ever been, if he does not win at Western, it will be because the administration did not pony up the dollars because he is a proven winner. We will be fine. Oklahoma had a chip on their shoulder because of the Tulane game and their coaches were probably pretty rough on their players this past week, so they came out and made an example of us and yes they definitely tried to run the score up and dominate us. Teams like that will expose every weakness a team like Western has which is a good thing. The good news is that to a position player, we will not face another team or player this year that is as good as what we faced last night.

I did not pay to watch the game but i do have a question. Did Lincoln Riley run the score up or was it just Western could not stop anything they put on the field? I do not think Lincoln Riley intentionally ran up the score he is not that kind of guy. While they needed style points for rankings, OU took a knee before the half when they could have scored. He put in his 2nd and 3rd string against us in the 2nd half. They are one of the best teams in college football with some of the best athletes and they run Lincoln's version of the Mike Leach style Air Raid offense. It is not uncommon for Oklahoma to put 50+ and 60+ points on FBS or even P5 teams, its the nature of that offense. On the otherside as in last week, teams can also score a lot of points against them too, (ex: Tulane last week). When LR was the OC at ECU we put over 60 against Tulane and tbe magical 70 over an early Larry Fedora's UNC team. What I saw and heard from Coach Bell, we too put in i guess essentially our 3rd string QB to get some reps and experience, Lincke is out sick and did not travel. But he wanted the QB to play at the same fast up-tempo pace as if it was still a close game but as he is young and green he turned the ball over quite a few times and Oklahoma scored on a number of them, the idea if where not trying to run the score up but are playing football and we could not stop them. Bell mentioned postgame that when the game got out of hand he could have kept his starters in and slowed the tempo to stop their scoring but that was not his plan and he used that time to get his team some experience to use when we get back to FCS play.

Well put, although I think Carlos is second string (it's listed as either-or on the two-deep). Turnovers aside he didn't play badly.

On Carlos you might be right, I thought Lincke was 2nd but they both have potential and we only have Wells for this season so its good for both to get experience. Not sure, what next year holds in terms of QBs or if both Carlos and Lincke will be backups in future Catamount seasons but they are only 1 play away from being in the game.

I still am & think he was a great hire. However, Western has a long history of having a hard time winning football games. Recruiting kids who are willing to come to Western is the issue. I will attend the Samford game Saturday & hope Coach Bell can motivate the kids to do their best against Samford. From here on out Western’s state of mind will play a major issue in the W/L column.
