I still think this team will be fine. Last year upstate won 37 game so they are not slouches. Also this was a mid-week game and Coach was able to try a lot of pitchers. I think this team has the potential to be in the thick of the SoCon race this year. This is still the preseason the way I look at it. This is only one game. Illinois State will be just as tough or tougher, but these games don’t matter as much as conference games in my opinion. All is not lost.

Had a friend with me at the game. No connection with WCU, but really knowledgeable about the game of baseball. His unsolicited comment, as we were riding home, "Western just did not seem to have a fire in their belly... their overall play was kinda lethargic". I could not disagree with him. Best part of the trip was seeing some folks I had not seen in a couple of years, like Paul and Nora Jones. Also was good to see Wayne Tolleson and Jack Leggett, a couple of great contributors to Catamount baseball in years past. Incidentally, I saw a post the other day that mentioned Tolleson and Jackie Robinson in the same breath, as accomplished two-sport athletes. Pointed out that Robinson once led the nation as a punt returner, and Tolleson, a future Ranger, led the nation in receptions in '77.

Upstate brings WCU baseball and WCU fans back to reality. Might be a good thing

Based solely on their first weekend series at #2 Arkansas, Illinois St. will be a very good opponent. If they played lethargic last night they better come with some fire this weekend or they could be on the other end of a sweep this weekend.
