Us as Western. Before the field was expanded for 99 there were very few atlarge from SoCon. It be easy to figure how many but don’t have time. One of bog reasons we got left in 98 was we finished regular season 3rd behind Citadel and UNCG. Atlarge was very had to get in those days for teams in SoCon. When the league rolling in mid 2000’s to what somewhere in mid 2010’s got 2 on regular basis because had Elon, CofC, GSU in contention about every year then WCU and Citadel would have good years now and then. I used to do projecting tourney bids back in those days and might miss 2 but usually could predict teams or miss one for the website CBD. The resumes and what needed to do was not hard.

We’ve only had 2 atlarge bids. 1994 and 2007. We were 45-15 in 1998 and didn’t get one. A year later they expanded the field. Just curious, but when you say "we only had 2 at-large bids" do you mean WCU or SoCon as a whole? Has to mean WCU. In 2010 the Socon had 2 at large bids alone. When the Conference changed around 2013-14 or so and i don't think there has been an at large bid since, even though several teams won 40 games. 2014 WCU won 40 didn't get a bid. It is highly unlikely a team will get an at large bid from the SoCon. There was talk last year WCU might until injuries struck. This year Mercer is off to a 16-4 start and might have a shot if they can keep up the pace but I wouldn't count on one. WCU was in top 25 RPI when they were talking, Mercer has a good RPI but are 41 currently. IMO a Socon team probably needs 40 wins and be in the top 50 RPI to get consideration.

Me and former coach still argue about this crap. It used to be you win 40 games and have RPI under 50 you had damn good shot at getting atlarge. It’s all changed though cause a lot folks don’t play full schedule so it messes it up.
It’s actually still not hard to figure out. Do you want one way to get in regional or two? Lately we have limited our selves to only one way in. And that is by winning tourney which is not easy. So let’s make it so we have 2 chances to get. What that means is you play a damn good schedule get some wins against quality clubs. I don’t know this for 100% but would love to back this up with numbers. You get swept on road vs let’s say Georgia Tech. Probably bad example but you’ll get my point. Getting swept will give you a hell of a lot better chance and look better then beating crap out of….you know. So scheduling is gonna determine a lot. Many variables when making schedules and done a lot times years ahead. You play crap you’ll get crap. I’m not genius but if was me I’d want 2 ways in not forcing club to win tourney.
