Peripherally related anecdote for the "youngsters" here: It was big news in Cullowhee when the Catamounts were featured in Sports Illustrated in the late seventies (I'm sure retiredcat played a big role). The story was about the "best rivalry nobody ever heard of" (WCU/APP), but was more centered on Western and included a photo of Wayne. On the cover was a relative unknown at the time, Larry Bird, in his Indiana State uni.

The writer from SPORTS ILLUSTRATED lived in New York City and was fascinated by Cullowhee during his three days here in the fall of 1977. The gist of the story was small guys (Wayne Tolleson and Darrell Lipford) can put up big numbers in college football. Wayne Tolleson led NCAA Division I (we spent two seasons as NCAA Division I before the Southern Conference was reclassified as I-AA in 1978). Tolleson led the nation in pass receptions and Lipford finished in the top 10 nationally in rushing yardage and rushing TDs. He might have finished No.1 but saw limited play in our last game with App State because of a toe injury. SI sent me 500 copies of that issue and they were well distributed throughout our team, campus, supporters and potential recruits. I still have a couple copies.
Incidentally, the cover story about Larry Bird also contained quotes from his coach, Bill Hodges, who led Indiana State to the NCAA Championship Game against Magic and Michigan State. Bill now lives in Jackson County and is an occasional golf buddy.
