I think he deserved SoCon Coach of the Year consideration. He guided a team picked eighth in the preseason to a fourth-place finish, while Samford and UNCG coaches did exactly what was expected of them when their teams finished second and third. While meeting expectations is fine, there is a lot to be said for exceeding expectations.
