WAYNESVILLE — Michael Eugene Stamey, age 72, unexpectedly and peacefully passed away on Saturday, March 25, 2023, at his home.
A native of Haywood County, he was the only son of Thurman Stamey and Hazel Ball Stamey. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Barbara Jean Jolly, JoAnn Burrell and Linda Kay Crosby.
Mike had a successful career in banking and real estate. He was a loan officer for over 20 years with Haywood Savings & Loan, a mortgage lender at Mountain Bank and Coldwell Banker and currently was a broker at Beverly-Hanks/Allen Tate real estate firm. Mike lived life to its fullest and enjoyed being active. Some of his favorite activities were being in nature, rooting for Clemson football and spending time with his family, especially his grandson. Those who knew and loved Mike will miss him tremendously.
Mike is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Renee Stamey; daughter, Stephanie Hopfinger (Jason); son, Chris Stamey (Brandi Mehaffey); sisters, Elizabeth Mease and Patricia Burnett; and treasured grandson, Coleman Hopfinger.
A celebration of life will be held at 12 p.m. on Thursday, March 30, 2023, in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Brian Cagle officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
