Western Carolina Hosts the Annual Catamount Classic This Friday & Saturday
Western Carolina track & field welcomes 11 teams to the Catamount Athletic Complex this weekend as it hosts the annual Catamount Classic over two days, Friday (April 14) and Saturday (April 15) as a precursor to WCU hosting the 2023 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships May 8-9. The event is open to the public and admission is free. Live results for the meet will be available via a link on CatamountSports.com. The meet begins Friday at 1 p.m. with the men's pole vault competition and also sees the men's and women's hammer throw, men's and women's javelin, men's and women's long jump, and women's pole vault on a busy day of field events. Track events start at 3:30 p.m. with preliminary heats of the women's 100-meter hurdles, with the opening day concluding with the men's 5,000-meter run at 8:30 p.m. The Cats will be facing off against multiple Appalachian area universities including ETSU, Wofford, UNC Asheville, Northern Kentucky, the Citadel, Winthrop, and Gardner-Webb.

Catamount Track & Field recorded Four Event Wins Friday at the Catamount Classic
In the men's pole vault which kicked off the meet, Jonathan Lehe won in a jump-off with a new personal best height of 4.46 meters. Javon Brown led a WCU podium sweep in the long jump with a winning mark of 7.20 meters (23'7.5"). Javell Brown was second, also with a leap of 7.20 meters but was the runner-up due to needing more attempts. Tyler Rodriguez finished in third place with a top mark of 7.03 meters (23'0.75"). Jackson Livingston won the men's javelin with a throw of 52.37 meters. Michael Harris tied his men's 400-meter dash personal record of 47.62 as he took the event victory. Elias Barton placed ninth with a time of 49.76. Jonny Sherwood won the men's 3000-meter steeplechase in 9:50.24, outdueling ETSU's Abdul Jaber in a final lap battle. Javon Brown won the men's triple jump with a leap of 14.96 meters (49'1"), besting his brother Javell Brown who placed second with a top jump of 14.76 meters (48'5.25"). Tyler Rodriguez finished eighth thanks to a jump of 13.55 meters (44'5.5"). Javell Brown earned his second podium finish of the day with a third-place finish in the men's high jump. Brown cleared the bar set at 1.95 meters (6'4.75"). WCU's men's 4x400-meter relay team of Noah Straley, Elias Barton, David Miles, and Harris closed out the meet with a second-place finish. The quartet finished the race in 3:14.97. John Davis ran the third-fastest 800-meter run time in program history at 1:50.78, which is also a new personal best. He finished the race in third place.
