Clemson: If three players don't leave between now and training camp, Clemson will have to take away scholarships from some former walk-ons.
Dabo Swinney has a problem. A good problem to have, to be sure, but a problem nonetheless. Too many qualified players want to be Clemson Tigers.
Speaking at the Greenwood Prowl and Growl -- fantastic name -- Dabo Swinney explained that Clemson currently has 88 players on scholarship, three above the 85-man limit. Swinney also said he was about two-thirds of the way through his post-spring interviews with each Clemson scholarship player and walk-on, no scholarship player has indicated he plans to leave.

Isn’t there other money at most state supported schools that do not count toward athletic scholarship totals? For example, if a kid qualifies for need based aid like what used to be called a Pell grant, a school can give that grant for the kid to attend school as a regular student and that kid can be on the football team and have their college paid for and that does not count toward the number of athletic scholarships. Also, if a kid qualifies for an academic scholarship, that kid can be on the football team and not be counted as on athletic scholarship. I don’t think the NCAA can do anything about kids that are on the team and get their college paid for outside of the Athletic department. That way schools can have more players with paid for college than the maximum allowed. I know that when I was in school at Western in the eighties that I had friends from my hometown that were on the football team on grant and aid based assistance that were not on athletic scholarship and one of them was a starter. It’s all about being creative and how you skin the Cat. I do not believe the NCAA can regulate accademic and need based aid outside of the athletic department.

I think you are correct in your observations, however the article is about athletic scholarships. Clemson has 88 on athletic scholarship right now, and the limit is 85. The point of the article is that if 3 or more scholarship players don't leave the program, Dabo Swinney's plan is to take the athletic scholarships away from walk-on players, that had earned scholarships. Clemson has an enduement of $1.007 Billion, so I think they could keep three players on some type of scholarship other than athletic, which as you say, the NCAA has no purview over.
