I hope not. Now is not the time to be firing anyone and starting over when we need to win the next 2 to hopefully make the playoffs.

do you think a change would be made after the season even if we win the next two games scrapping by like we did this past weekend?

I have no idea. I don’t think that is on the table but I don’t know. As you know, Coach Bell makes all of those decisions and he is not going to talk about that in public. Firing a coordinator is a big deal and personally, I don’t think it is necessary.

I don't think Coach Bell would make a change until after the season is over....Once we finish playing he does need to pay some serious attention to our defense both players ( transfer portal ) and Coaches....We have some problems that just aren't getting fixed.....

This is the coaches 3rd year and we are now competitive again. It is obvious hat the turn around on the offensive side of the ball has been faster than on the defensive side. I trust Coach Bell to do whatever needs to be done to “fix” the defense if it needs fixing. In my opinion, it is better than it was when Bell got here so there has been improvement. It seems to me that the defensive coaches do make adjustments at halftime and we play better defense in the second half in just about every game. For some reason, we seem to come out slow on defense in most games and then get better as the game goes on. I don’t know if that is coaching or players or motivation or what but it seems we improve as the game goes on.

the slow start bit us in the butt in both losses this year though. The defense can not spot 2 td leads against good teams and expect to win

In all fairness, falling way behind Mercer wasn't entirely the defense's fault. They got 2 TDs on a fumble recovery and a pick-6, and were setup right off the bat with great field position for their first score. That is 14 of Mercer's 45 points directly, and spotted in a place where they were probably going to get no worse than 3 points on the first drive. We have been WAY better against the run this year than in the last several years (probably the last 7 or 8). We need a few bigger and faster corners and safeties who can both cover and come up and defend the run rather than playing soft, and we will need a couple of space-eaters in the middle who can keep teams from getting those back-breaking 3rd and 3 or 4s. Again I think if this defense had Micah Nelson and Mateo Sudipo (who we will have next season) we would have been much more physical.
Playing Furman was bad because it felt like everybody knew they were going to run it and get 5 yards - but of course the Paladins have done that to pretty much everybody. We are giving up just over 30 points per game, but 106 of those came in 2 games (56 to Arkansas and 50 to UTC). Take Arkansas out and we are giving up just over 27 points per game against FCS schools (and we played a bunch of younger guys who gave up some late points to Charleston Southern).
So we gave up some big plays to UTC. We got way behind Mercer in a game that wasn't completely the D's fault. Other than that (and the FBS money game), the defense has played good enough for us to be in/win pretty much all the rest of the games. I know I have for years said I wish we just had a decent defense, and if we have one that can hold other teams to under 24 points we should be able to score enough to win most games. I think we will have a team who can do that next season, so I would not expect a huge change over on that side other than trying to bring in some more players. We'll be pretty loaded on offense, so I'd expect a large concentration of recruiting to be on O-line and defense.
