I don't disagree with most of what you said, except this:
I understand this statement as well:
I'm sure you're highly respected by most, if not all, the folks you worked with for those 47 years, however, respect and friendship with you is on a personal basis, and is not necessarily reflective of those same folks opinion of Western Carolina.
This is my opinion, based on those same 47 years of observation from the outside, looking in. I wish I were wrong, but I don't think I am, and I think your opinion is colored by your personal relationships and friendships with those at the other SoCon schools. Just because a person is liked and respected, does not mean the organization that the person works for, is liked or respected....

One more thing about the CAA...Back in 1975, Richmond and William & Mary were not happy about East Carolina's and App State's membership in the SoCon and when it appeared that WCU. Chattanooga and Marshall were getting enough votes for admission, they (Richmond and Bill & Mary) pulled out of the conference. Some of their heavy supporters called the new additions "Diploma Factories". They probably would not support our application if we did apply...which is not going to happen. That is my point. The privates, as well as, the two military schools still think of WCU, UTC, and ETSU as the same "Diploma Factories" as did Richmond & W&M back in the day. Thanks for making my point. You may be able to work through this and live with it and be happy with the "bus league" it is, because of your past associations, but I think it's a "Crap" place for Western Carolina to be...

If we're penny pinching right now and begging for funds to build our new athletic facilities there's no money for the huge SoCon buyout that's why the league jumped the exit fee this past summer. Told the member schools I dare you to leave because you can't afford it. Basically guaranteeing the Socon life in the future. I'm more on the side of bringing other schools into the Socon to give us Divisions and rotating schools to play.

No doubt that is the theory behind the $2 Million exit fee, however, it does not guarantee the SoCon life into the future. It's easy to depart and pay nothing. How? Just move your football program to another conference as an associate member. The SoCon can't stop you from doing that, and then see how fast they hold a vote to kick you out of the SoCon with no exit fee to be paid.

Not sure how to feel about this. Two private schools that bring smaller crowds than we do? Chattanooga maybe? Idk

Idk I'd say you can eliminate these two, even if the CUSA is evaluating teams, they wouldn't make the cut. Chattanooga does not have the $2 million buy out from the SoCon and $5 million buy-in to the FBS, they are in no better shape financially than WCU, not even thinking about the athletic budget needed for any level of FBS conferences... Furman
Samford
Chattanooga (probably eliminate)

I wonder if the Socon would be interested in either one of those two teams for football. I wouldn't mind playing Charleston Southern every year.
