App State is located in Boone with quick access to Greensboro and Winston-Salem. They have much greater financial opportunities than does WCU located in Cullowhee. Their alumni base is much much larger than WCU's. They have developed a culture of winning football and that has gained them immense inroads into adequate funding sources. It's time that we quite bitching about how successful they are in comparison to WCU. For where we are located and the inadequate financial resources WCU has it is amazing that we compete as well as we do. Sounds like excuses to me. We used to be on par with Appy back in the 70s and 80s and many years we beat them in football. App State made a conscious decision to invest in football and our leadership did not. That is why they are where they are now. It is also a big reason that they grew at a much faster rate than Western did. Your post reads like, we are Western and we can’t do any better because of our location. Our location can be a strength. It is just an excuse to say we can’t be a top football school. It is about priorities and what the school chooses to spend its talents and resources on. It is a cop out to say this is all because of our location and that App State is larger and better. If they are larger and better, it is because our leadership did not do the things now and in the past to position Western where we should have been positioned. Sadly, I don’t think the current leadership gets it and does not have the vision or fortitude to make the tough decisions to position Western where it needs to be positioned. That is why the App State alumni base call us the CANTamounts. Western can do anything we set our minds to with the right leadership. I don’t like the defeatist attitude that we can’t do any better because we are Western. Yes we can!!!!
