I was at the game. We did give up a lot of yards, but the defense only gave up 14 points this week and 17 last week. Can’t count the safety against the defense. We have beaten 2 of the weaker teams in the SoCon and I figure we will beat Furman next week and then we have Mercer away and Chatt at home. If we play like we did today and last week, we will lose to Mercer for sure and maybe lose to Chatt. The difference in this years offense and last years offense is Desmond Reid. We had a running game because of Desmond Reid. Everything else is about the same and our new OC pretty much calls the game just like Kade did. I noticed today that we have some pretty good backs but they lack the ability to make the first guy miss and are often tackled as soon as they break through the hole. Reid is a different level back and we don’t have anyone close to his talent level. As far as the defense goes, it seems like everyone on the field is covered except the opposing QB. No one is accounting for the QB. Surely this can be fixed. Many times no one was open down field and we gave up 10 or 20 yards on a QB scramble when we had them in 3rd and long. If we do not solve the running game issue and stop giving up big plays on 3rd and long, we will not beat the elite teams in our conference. I think we can be a lot better than we have because there is a ton of talent on this team. If we play to our potential, I don’t think there is a team in the SoCon that can play with us. We need to break out of this funk.

Agree FL. I know giving up yards doesn’t seem to matter when we win the last 2 games. But we just beat 2 of what will probably be the bottom of the SOCON. If we play this kind of ball against Mercer, UTC, and ETSU we will lose. It will be iffy vs Samford. We probably have enough to beat Furman and we should beat VMI.
So we need to get better on D and we also need to keep going on O. We really kind of slowed down in the 2nd half and kind of went into a hold on to win mode as already mentioned. A

I was also there today and I knew that the QB was going to run as he does this stutter step right before he runs and the DC never picked up on it and it about bite us bad

Did Bell do a post game? Also does WCU have the ability now to use tablets to look over plays with players from a previous series?

Just some thoughts and a question. 1.On the missed extra point, our seats are in the purple zone and the kick sure looked good. Our kicker and holder both thought it was good too. Is that subject to review? 2. When Citadel changed QBs in the second half, they went old school option. We struggled to stop them. Not sure why they went back to 11, yet he was running well too. We tend to stop the qb up the middle when Nelson is moved to inside LB. That move was rare? 3. Ricciardi family visited with us before and after the game. Very complimentary of WCU. Still loves WCU but his son is very pleased with Citadel. Class act! 4. Evan Byrd, DB at Citadel, is an acquaintance and after the game he told us that “WCU has so many good athletes and talent” Impressed with our speed. 5. Anyone notice that Drayton never met Bell after the game at centerfield? Or did I miss it?
Go Cats!

We gave up another 429 yards - 274 on the ground with more than 200 to their QBs. I voted the D was better and adjusting to the 3rd scheme in the last 4 years. But stats don’t lie. We gotta figure out things over there and we need to be more aggressive on O. We are in good shape in the SOCON after a couple of games but all our hard games are ahead of us. Let’s beat Furman then get our chin straps buckled up for Mercer. A good defense does not give up that many yards so I agree we better figure out something on the D side or the rest of the season will be ugly. Yes, we only gave up 14 pts but the good teams coming up will see the yardage given up and be eager to face this defense. They will put more points and gain more yardage on us unless something gets worked out.
