That was actually from the mid-60s before they moved the lights off the field to the road behind the press box.

Head football coach Dan Robinson Dan came to Cullowhee following World War II and was a two-way starter and captain of the 1949 Catamount football team that won the North State Conference Championship and a trip to the Smoky Mountain Bowl. He was WCU’s head football from 1956-1968 and guided the program to outstanding seasons in ’59, ’60, ’64, and ’65.

That photo was from the 1972 Homecoming Game. There were around 8,500 PAID admission that day (an all-time record at the time) and another couple hundred freebies who came in through the many of the several openings that led to Memorial Stadium. The opponent was Livingston State of Alabama (now West Alabama) and they had won the 1971 NAIA National Championship. The game ended in 14-14 tie and both teams remained ranked in the AP small college poll top 10. The player pictured is fullback David Hackett who was stopped inside the 5 yard line as time expired. We had no timeouts left and couldn't stop the clock. We finished 7-2-1, defeated App State, Furman, The Citadel and finished 8th in the final AP rankings. Quite a football team that couldn't go to any national playoffs as we were in a transitional state between NAIA and NCAA Division II.

Memorial Stadium... in the early 70's This is the old Memorial Stadium on campus, EJ Whitmire replaced it. The new science now sits on the spot of the Memorial Stadium...
