Western Carolina baseball tapped into West Iredell more than once this offseason. The Catamounts signed Warriors outfielder Garrett Bell. He joins teammate Brett Pope as part of their recruiting class. Bell and Pope have their senior seasons at West Iredell ahead of them before heading to Cullowhee. “It’s really exciting to have the chance to continue working with Brett and hopefully make the team better,” Bell said. “We’ve been playing together since we were 6, so four more years will be cool. Not many people get that opportunity.” www.statesville.com/sports/article_5a82c37c-682c-11e3-a1aa-0019bb30f31a.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitterLast time Western brought in high school teammates together (Attaway and Speiss from Patton High in Morganton), it worked out pretty good. Sure hope Bell and Pope can be part of similar success in Cullowhee.

Saw two of our incoming Cat baseball players in Greensboro this weekend. Caleb Robinson (Eastern Guilford 3B) and Brett Pope (West Iredell SS) were there for one game each with their fathers. They are excited about being Catamounts.
The coaches had all the young men who had/have committed to come to Cullowhee in the Fall of 2014 on the campus one weekend during last Fall's Practice. Caleb and Brett had never met before, but they hit it off that weekend and are planning to room together.
The future of Catamount baseball looks bright, despite our heavy losses to graduation this year (and perhaps some early losses to the MLB draft).

VALDESE — Draughn seniors Taylor Powell and Mason Biddix became the third and fourth members of this year’s Wildcats graduating class to commit to play collegiate baseball on Wednesday when Powell agreed to an offer from Western Carolina University while Biddix accepted an offer from Pfeiffer University both starting in the spring of 2015. Powell, a four-year starter, picked WCU because of the baseball atmosphere (the Catamounts opened the season with a victory at then No. 2 Mississippi State and followed that up with a home triumph against ACC power Clemson), the love of the campus, lots of friends at the school and his desire to play NCAA Division I baseball. “I’ve dreamed since I was a little boy and have put in the efforts by working on my hitting with the Hitting Factory Warriors out of Greensboro then playing for the (Asheville) Mountain Expos in the summertime,” Powell said. Powell currently leads the county with eight home runs. The shortstop has tallied 14 homers in his high school career, but one of his big hits shines a little brighter than the rest at this point, he said. www.morganton.com/sports/high_school/draughn-s-powell-chooses-wcu-for-baseball-teammate-biddix-selects/article_e3d579d4-c589-11e3-b78e-001a4bcf6878.html

Notice which hand he is using to sign. Back in 2008 (Coach Mo's first year), we had only three LH batters (except pitchers) on the whole squad. Only one of them was in the starting lineup. Now, a majority of our hitters are LH. First game of the year vs. Miss. State, our starting lineup was 7 LH batters (everyone except A-Mart and Attaway).

Kinda rare for a SR to wait until 2/3 of his last baseball season before deciding where to go to school. Most make that decision the prior Fall. Even rarer... throws RH (obviously, since he's a SS) and writes LH (photo above). I'm assuming he bats LH. We should have the most depth in the INF in my memory. B.Strong, R.Strong, JD Long, Prevatte, and newcomers Pope, Robinson, Powell, and Koehler. Somebody may be getting playing time in the OF, since our only returning OF's will be Matt Smith and Dale Jr.
