VMI was a member of the SoCon before and believe it or not, and this is probably before your time, ETSU basketball was once king of the SoCon and football had a decent little run in the 90s not to mention being a pretty good team back in the day as well under John Robert Bell. I'm gonna voice my opinion whether it suits your standards or not. GO CATS!

I dont care if they were a "pretty" good team, that does not help the conference. Back then there was a reason the SoCon was a one bid league baseball wise and still is basketball wise. Cause you had WCU, Georgia Southern and Citdel and the rest were awful. Now you have 7 programs that are strong WCU, GSU, App St, CofC, Samford, Elon and Citadel(have struggled in recent years though). You now take away GSU, App St and CofC that steps the conference back to yes when i was there. So you can prefer to add teams like ETSU and VMI and maybe it would help WCU finish higher in football, basketball and baseball but the overall effects would be bad for WCU. There is a reason we are not mentioned in rumors of conference realignment, you have to have something other people want. To improve the SoCon teams need to be brought in that actually help the conference grow not take it back 15-20 years. So i ask you what would ETSU and VMI actually bring to the table? Because they once had decent football back in the 90s does not cut it. Neither of us have a vote just our opinions.

My internet just went out damn it so im sure ill leave out some stuff. Probably better to say who should the SoCon add and who can the SoCon add. For WCU I hope they add public schools and not private schools. But what is going to be the selling point to schools to join the SoCon?
Who should SoCon add? -Coastal -Mercer -UNCW -Liberty -Kennesaw -FGCU -ETSU
Who can SoCon add? -Mercer -ETSU -VMI -Tenn Tech
The should add is more of wish list cause majority of those listed probably have no chance.

I dont see it though. Coastal would be a no brainer because they could help replace some of the football lost and baseball. Football team made the NCAA tourney last year and everyone knows how good of a baseball program they have.

They don't like their academic standing. Coastal has been lobbing the SoCon for several years for an invite, they were very disappointed that Samford got the invite rather than them.

I don't think the SoCon needs to add any more non-FCS football schools. I understand the Davidson symbolism and am fine with them but for the SoCon to survive, they are either going to have to go all in on football or become a D1 hoops conference like the A10.
Coastal fills an immediate need and wants in. They slide right in to CofC's spot and give us an additional football game. The Myrtle Beach area would be a great location to host the baseball and golf tournaments. I don't believe they have a basketball quality arena but I think the SoCon is back in love with Asheville for the time being anyway.
I understand the Kennesaw & Mercer prospects. True, ATL doesn't give a rat's rear end about them but it does give the SoCon a continued presence in Ga.
The only thing about ETSU that scares me is, they got rid of football for a reason. Money was the main culprit but behind that, they were never very successful. They might have an occasional flare-up but their overall history may be worse than WCU. Also Tennesseans care about one thing- the Vols, and they are down too. However, if ETSU is willing to commit, I think they need to come in.
My picks- Kennesaw, ETSU, and Coastal. The SoCon would then need to keep finely tuned to rumblings in the CAA. If a chance to grab any combination of Richmond, JMU, and or WM & Mary occurs, then they have to do it. Cut Sanford loose if you must.

Found this article that seems to say just what you guys have been saying about Coastal. saturdayblitz.com/2013/04/04/southern-conference-realignment/Here is another good one thesportsarsenal.com/2013/03/28/conference-realignment-socon-style-a-look-at-the-varsity-sports-portfolios-of-candidate-schools/
