Week One of the college football season was great for the FCS, our favorite underdog football division. No fewer than eight (8) FCS teams claimed victories over their FBS big brothers, a record number for a single weekend.
The upsets included Eastern Washington over No. 25 Oregon State. Other FBS losers were Georgia State (to Samford!), Iowa State (Northern Iowa), Kansas State (North Dakota State), San Diego State (Eastern Illinois), South Alabama (Southern Utah), UConn (Towson), and South Florida (McNeese State).
If only the news were as good for the Southern Conference, where just Samford and Georgia Southern* got off to decent starts. Samford’s 31-21 win came over a bad new FBS team (Georgia State) that used to be a bad FCS team. As for GSU*, not every one can schedule Savannah State for the opener.
