Western Carolina returns to Southern Conference play this weekend, visiting UNCG for a three-game series that gets underway Friday at 6:00 pm. UNCG comes into the game 14-13 overall, and 2-3 in the SoCon. The Spartans won a series against Furman 2-1, but dropped two games against App State this past weekend, with the third game canceled due to inclement weather. UNCG has won four of its last six games on the year, and the Spartans took a midweek game from local-rival, North Carolina A&T, on Wednesday. The Spartans ranks second in the SoCon in batting average (.306) with seven players hitting .304-or-better, and leads the league in two statistical categories - triples (12) and fewest strikeouts (157). All three games will be broadcast by the Catamount Sports Network and can be heard online with live streaming audio at CatamountSports.com. 540 AM WRGC in Sylva is also slated to carry the CSN broadcast on Friday evening. UNCG will be streaming the games live and free on Spartan All-Access and UNCG Live Stats

Tough game tonight. UNC-G is a good hitting team. Jeremy Null gave up more hits tonight than any other start this year, but he gutted it out and left a lot of runners on base. At one point he gave us a HR and two singles to 3 consecutive batters. Aaron Attaway missed the first game of his career due to an injured left wrist. Hate he broke a great string, but he needed to rest. Nagging injury that has caused his BA to tumble to .260 over past weeks. He's a career .325 hitter. Need to get Game 2 tomorrow. Hope more Cat fans turn out for the game.

Game 2 was a crazy affair. We led 11-4 after 3 innings. Similar to Friday's game, we scored early and stopped hitting. UNC-G has a lefty pitcher who had a hand in causing that. He pitched 4-5 innings and stopped the bleeding.
In the 6th inning, the home plate umpire's strike zone suddenly changed and became similar to the diameter of a drinking straw by the 8th inning. UNC-G is a GOOD HITTING TEAM !! What does a good hitting team do when they have no fear of getting a strike called on them? They sit on a fast ball in the groove and they knock the cover off of it. Poor Colton Davis was one of the biggest victims of the strike non-calls. Coach Mo brought in Tyler Powell at a strange time, IMO. 2 out; 3-2 count and he changed pitchers?
Anyway, Tyler got no more relief from the miniscule strike zone than Colton. By the time, we got out of the bottom of the 8th, a 12-6 lead evaporated and the game was tied 12-12.
We did nothing offensively in the top of the 9th and Tyler kept Greensboro from doing a walk-off win, despite hitting one batter and walking one.
Top of the 10th, Jacob Hoyle led off by crushing one over the RF wall. Tyler got one out and walked one in the bottom of the 10th but he was gassed. He had to throw 60+ pitches, thanks to Homer the umpire. Freshman Bryan Sammons retired the last two batters on a total of only 4 pitches. Quite a position to put the FR in but he came through with flying colors.
Jordan Smith will go for the sweep tomorrow. It is going to be essential for Jordan to do DEEP into the game because of all the pitching we had to use today.
Go Cats !!

Aaron Attaway should definitely not play tomorrow. He was brought in for defensive purposes in the 3rd inning (I think) but was unable to swing a bat due to his left wrist hurting. (Don't know if any diagnosis has been made on the problem.) But he had to bunt (which he did effectively twice) but you can't bunt when 2 infielders are camped out 30-40 feet from home plate.
We are going to have to depend upon Reece and J.D. to hold down the left side of the INF defensively.

Western Carolina (20-9, 8-1 SoCon) swept the series in Greensboro for the second-straight season and has won nine-straight games while UNCG (14-16, 2-6 SoCon) dropped its fifth consecutive SoCon decision.
The Spartans out-hit the Catamounts in all three games, including by an 8-7 margin Sunday, but their only run came off a leadoff home run by senior Sean Guite in the bottom of the fourth inning.

UNC-G has some sticks. Great hitting ball club. Their deficiency is pitching. But a much better team than their 14-16 overall record would indicate. We won 3 games by a total margin of 4 runs. And a road sweep against anyone in the SoCon is a tough thing to pull off. Especially with your all-conf SS on the bench. But no excuses... injuries happen to all teams and you have to deal with it.
