Day 3 Results
May 22 (Thursday) Game 7: #4 Georgia Southern vs. #1 Western Carolina 10 a.m. Georgia Southern made it 3 of 4 wins during the season against the number one seed, Western Carolina. The Eagles sent the Cats packing back to Cullowhee with an 8-4 win over the Cats. GSU out hit WCU 13-8, while GSU's four home runs did what the Eagles needed to send WCU home.
Game 8: #10 The Citadel vs. #6 Wofford 1 p.m. As GSU did to WCU in today's first game, the Terriers sent the SoCon tournament host Bulldogs home. The lone difference is, the number 10 seed did win one game in the tournament, while the number one seed went home after two back to back losses. The Bulldogs out hit the Terriers, 9-6 but could push across only two runs in the game, leaving a grand total of 13 base runner on base, to only 4 for the Terriers.
Game 9: #5 Appalachian State vs. #8 Furman 5/8 p.m. The Furman Paladins knock off App State, to pick up their third win of the tournament, beating UNCG in the play-in, then knocking off the number 1 seed, Western Carolina, and today, beating the #5 seed, Appy State, 3-1. The Mountaineers out hit the Paladins 8-3, but was only able to push one run across, in the top of the 9th to tie the score 1-1. In the bottom of the 9th, the first up at bat walked, then Harrison got a walk off homer down the lf line, to win the game.
Game 10: #2 Davidson vs. #3 Samford 5/8 p.m. Samford knocked off the number 2 seed Davidson 7-3 in the final game of the day on Thursday. Samford out hit the Wildcats 9-5. Davidson now moves to the lowers bracket, and will play on Friday.

Samford put Davidson down in the loser's bracket in last night's last game.
Samford will be off today (Friday) and await the winner of Wofford-Davidson on Saturday. Samford only has to win one game to get into the championship game, whereas the Wofford-Davidson winner has to beat Samford twice.
GSU just eliminated App and will face Furman tomorrow (Saturday). They will have to beat Furman twice to get into the championship game.
I don't want any school that is leaving the SoCon this year to win the tournament. So I am pulling for Furman, Samford or Wofford to take it.... probably in that order of preference for me.

Day 4 results
May 23 (Friday)
Game 11: #4 Georgia Southern vs. #5 Appalachian State 3 p.m. Georgia Southern sends Appy State home in today's first elimination game, beating the hillbillies 2-1. Both teams had 7 hits in the game, but the Apps could only push across one run. The forth inning was the only scoring inning for both teams, with ASU picking up one run, and GSU pushing two runs across. The other 8 innings were a shut-out for both teams.
Game 12: #6 Wofford vs.#2 Davidson 6:30 p.m. Wofford sends the number 2 seed Wildcats home in the second elimination game of the day, beating the Wildcats 10-7. Davidson out hit the Terriers 16-14, but left 14 base runners stranded on base.
With this loss, Davidson, Elon, & Appy State are for all practical purposes, now out of the SoCon. Only the Stink remains to be eliminated, hopefully that will be taken card of tomorrow.

Davidson scored 5 runs in the 1st inning, but Wofford pretty well shut them down and got back in the game. Wofford has gotten good pitching most of the tournament.

I know most Western folks tuned baseball out early Thursday afternoon. But the tournament continues, even without WCU. And someone is going to be representing us in the NCAA Regionals. And baseball junkies like 32 and myself are still watching what's happening in Charleston.
I said earlier this week that I did not want any of the schools that are leaving the SoCon to win the tournament. And, hopefully, it is shaping up this way. As of this morning, there were only 4 teams left... Samford and Furman with NO LOSSES and Wofford and Ga Southern with ONE LOSS each.
First game today, GSU beat Furman 11-8 so they both have one loss now and have to play each other again today (starting about 6:00 pm). I'm hoping that Furman will take this one, however even if GSU wins, they will have an uphill climb tomorrow.
Second game, Samford dispatched Wofford rather handily 12-3. Wofford is eliminated and Samford goes into tomorrow's championship game with a decided advantage.
Tomorrow will only be Samford's 4th game of the tournament. They will face either Furman or GSU and tomorrow's game will be the 6th game for which ever of them makes it. How deep can you go in your pitching staff and still get quality stuff? We will find out tomorrow. Samford will be hard to beat.

Southern is finding ways to win. Up 4-0 in game 2. I said before we got pounded by GSU that who ever won that game would have a good chance to go through losers bracket. Some teams find a way to win some dont

Yes, GSU found a way to win today. Took Game 2 10-7 in 12 innings. GSU was up 7-1 at one point but Furman caught them in the bottom of the 9th. Furman left a ton of runners on base (compared to GSU), but that would be to the credit of GSU pitching.
Will be interesting to see how much pitching they have left. Samford will be coming back with Ledford (their first game starter on Wednesday).

GSU ties the game, then gets the walk off win over Samford.
This is our fault. We should have beat GSU, they should not have made it to the championship game.
They are really feeling their oats now.

I did not want any of the schools leaving the SoCon to win the tournament, but Rodney and the GSU Eagles showed a tremendous amount of heart and determination to come back and win 5 games in a row during the last 4 days. Hats off to them.
For a team to lose the first game they play in the tournament and come back to win the championship has only happened 3 times in the history of the SoCon but it has happened two years in a row... E-Loan did it last year and GSU this year.

All-Tournament Team SP – Jeffrey Springs, Appalachian State SP – Alex Ledford, Samford RP – Jason Richman, Georgia Southern C – Daniel Gerow, Davidson 1B – Caleb Bryson, Samford 2B – Ben Morgan, Georgia Southern SS – Dalton Busby, Georgia Southern 3B – Michael Pierson, Appalachian State OF – Jake Jones, Furman OF – Aaron Mizell, Georgia Southern OF – Heath Quinn, Samford DH – Alex Abrams, Furman Most Outstanding Player Jason Richman, Georgia Southern
The regular season champions didn't even get a smell of an all tournament team position.
That's a shame, not meaning they should have had someone on this team, meaning they should have played well enough to have several on the team.
