Tyler White was promoted to High-A in the Astros organization this past week and assigned to Lancaster (CA) in the California League.
In his first game at Lancaster (Thursday of this week), he was the DH and went 2 for 4 + a walk. No strikeouts. Second game (Friday), he was 0-fur four with a walk and 3 K's. (Very rare for him to strike out 3 times in one game.)
To review, Tyler was drafted in Round 33 of the 2013 MLB draft by the Houston Astros. He had just completed his SR season in Cullowhee and signed on June 17, 2013. T-White was assigned to the Gulf Coast League (Rookie League) Astros and played 18 games. He batted .365 with one HR and 15 RBI's, playing 3B primarily.
Because of his outstanding performance, he was promoted to Greeneville (TN) in the Appalachian League (Class A). T-White played in 18 games with Greeneville and batted .344 with 2 HR's and 12 RBI's. He was moved to Tri-City Valley Cats in the NY-Penn League (also Class A) and finished the season there, playing in 28 games. He batted .286 with 3 HR's and 25 RBI's.
Very rare for a player to be assigned to 3 different minor league teams in the same season, especially their FIRST SEASON when they don't even get started until late June. I think the Astros could not believe how he was performing and wanted to see if the next level would slow him down.
Tyler started the 2014 season in the Midwest League (also Class A) assigned to the Quad Cities River Bandits (Cool name, huh?) [Quad Cities = 5 cities that straddle the Mississippi River; 2 of them in Iowa (Davenport and Bettendorf) and 3 of them in Illinois (Moline, East Moline and Rock Island)] The park where they play is located in Davenport. Tyler played in 71 games, batting .305 with 7 HR's and 41 RBI's, primarily playing 3B.
During the All-Star break he was promoted to Lancaster (CA) which is in High A classification. Pretty good performance by a 33-rounder... Way to go, Tyler! You've been proving people wrong for years who said you couldn't play at the next level...
With his progress, I think there is a chance the Astros will select him to play in the Arizona Fall League beginning in October. Each MLB team sends 7 players from their farm system to the AFL. The AFL plays a 6-7 week season (6 games per week with Sundays off). Begins second week of October and finishes on the Saturday before Thanksgiving.
I'd love to see that because I'm planning to go out to Arizona again this Fall and see several AFL games. That's a highlight of the year for an old retired baseball nut. (^_^) If he's out in AZ, I'm going to take him out to the finest restaurant and let him order whatever he wants. My grandchildren will love to meet T-White.
